Problems Installing SATA Disk Drive

Hey guys,

A friend of mine just bought a SATA disk drive, and he's having a few problems installing it. I've had him write out the problem and what he's done so far in the hopes that you might know what he can do to get it running.

"I just bought a Western Digital 120GB SATA drive (WD1200) and first tried connecting it along with my current IDE drive. At first the drive didn't even seem to start, as it wasn't making any noise and I couldn't feel it spinning up, but then I realised I was connecting it through Sata1 and not Pri_Sata.

Now the drive seems to be initialising and I can feel it spinning up, but nothing is showing in "Disk Management." I tried the drive on it's own which just causes the system to warn me that it can't find any hard drives."

Thanks in advance for any help guys, he can't register but he will probably keep an eye on this thread himself.

Sincerely yours,
Úlfhednar.

He found the fasttx2k.sys file on the CD that came with the disk drive, and has set all that up now. It apparently said that the disk drive is "ready to use," but is still not showing the disk drive in My Computer or Disk Management.

The disk drive is showing in the arrays at startup, but he is unsure about wether he needs to set up any options in the arrays section of the BIOS (at least I think he said that it's in the BIOS.)

He's using a Socket 754 Newcastle 3000+, Asus K8V-SE Deluxe, and a Chaintech Geforce 6600GT 128MB AGP. He already has an IDE disk drive installed as his system disk, but I am not sure what make or capacity it is.

Has he installed the latest BIOS & drivers including VIA Hyperion Pro Driver Package Version 5.08A (here)?

Just thought of this...

Is the hard disk by any chance SATA2? Because he'll have to disable that (jumper or something) because mobo's only SATA. Hopefully he hasn't caused any damage :)

He's not updated the BIOS, but the version that shipped with it has full SATA(1) support. The disk is a SATA(1) and he's installing the driver package you linked to as we speak. :) Thanks for the help, will let you know if it works.

He installed the driver, but he got this error when he rebooted: -

Any ideas? :(

He's asked me to post his BIOS settings for you guys to look over, too. They are as follows: -

Settings #1:

OnChip SATA Bootrom - Enabled
OnBoard Promise - Enabled
- Operating Mode - RAID
When booting - Promise RAID - No Array

Settings #2:

OnChip SATA Bootrom - Enabled
OnBoard Promise - Enabled
- Operating Mode - OnBoard IDE operate Mode
Onboard - Sata 378 TX2 - Finds drive WD1200

Still nothing in My Computer or Disk Management with either set of settings.
