Hi
I think i must be missing something obvious - but how do i get 2 8.04 PCs to see each other and share files?

When i click on Places/Network it just says Windows network.

Do i need to install something or 'enable' something to get this to work?

Thanks

Diss

edit - its a wired connection and one of the PCs has 2 gigabit network ports

have managed to print to a network printer (also wired to the router) but still PCs still can't see each other

i have stopped firewall (in firestarter) and moblock and enabled folder sharing on each PC - but still no luck
:(

have installed a prog called SMB4k on both PCs

interestingly:
PC1 sees itself (though can't access/view any shared folders)
PC2 sees PC1 but can't access/view any shared folders

so close yet so far :(

I think y9ou need to install samba.. Sorry.. I'ma but ****** at,m coz I today is weightraining dna I been drink9nbg.

Try and network hsrae a folder and ti should ask you if you wnat to isntall a proggiue.

Have you right clicked the folder you want to share and clicked Properties then the Share tab?

May need to do that as root if you are denied access. Sudo nautilus gets you a file system browser as root.

___For both computers:
sudo apt-get install samba
reboot (due to group permissions bug in ubuntu)
right click a folder, choose sharing options, set as appropriate.
___To access a share:
Places --> Network --> Windows Network --> #Workgroup --> #Computername --> #SharedFolderName

They appear under windows network as you are using samba, which is for sharing with windows machines (though is compatible with linux too :D)

NB: Do not called your folder 'Shared' in ubuntu 8.04, this causes a permission denied error in many cases.

pretty sure i did all this - though will double check

gonna redo it as root as Fanatic suggests

tried all that and situation is now:

PC1 can see bits of PC2 (i think) - i get

workgroup
diss-deskt The Ip address shpown is for PC2
IPC$
PDF
print$
diss-deskto The Ip address shpown is for PC2
IPC$
PDF
print$

Can't seem to see any of the shared folders

N.B. Both PCs have the same name for the user and home folder - though when setting up the shares i called them different things - i thought this may have someting to do with the 2 desktops shown above but with slightly different names but both have the IP address of PC2

Both firewalls are turned off with firestarter and moblock has been stopped

Looking at PC2 - it sees the same as above, but again the IP addresses are for PC2 (i.e. itself)

it sounds like only one of them has samba installed and is sharing, and you are viewing that on both machines. Nautilus will show local samba shares in the appropriate workgroup as well as remote ones.

Hi again

much weirdness going on here

first - samba is installed on both and running ifconfig they have different IP (which are fixed from the router - well possibly)

First off - can i change my pc name (and how) - its defaulted to diss-desktop, but its the same on both PCs so don't want to take the risk its messing things up

also, one of the PCs has 2 LAN ports and i tried swopping them - the PC does not now get the same IP address it used to get - would swopping LAN ports do this?

so situation now is

PC1 sees 2 desktops. both with its own IP - so can access its own files from both

PC2 sees 2 desktops, one with its own IP and one with PC1 IP -- BUT both actually only give you access to its own (PC2 files)

so bottom line is that they still can't properly see each other

any advice?
any diagnostics i can run that will help?

many thanks

edit - the router is giving both PCs the same device name at the moment - hence wanting to change the desktop name
