Hi all, I need some advice. I have been having problems lately that when playing games, I get random pauses or stuttering in games at random intervals from 2 mins to 1 hour of gaming. The games will just freeze for around 2 - 3 seconds, then play normally. or slow down and stutter occasionally.

I have done the following: Changed HD, fresh install. Changed from an 6600gt to a gainward bliss 7900GT, tried on 1 stick of ram and still does it and onboard sound and a SB 5.1 card. The only things I am left with is mobo and CPU or maybe ram, but 2 sticks faulty. Temps are normal and nothing is overclocked.

PSU is adequate and strong with 24amps in the 12v. Anyone encounter this before, as to me it sounds RAM related, but would both sticks be faulty. Machine is as follows:

A64 3200
1 Gb Crucial Ram
Chaintech VNF4 Ultra mobo
Maxtor HD 200 gb IDE and Sata slave

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Have a look in task manager, Look at the box labeled Commit Charge(K) and look at the Peak figure.

If Peak > Ram, then your system's being forced to swap out a lot of data to the swapfile.

Swapfiles not always a bad thing, but if your just running a game+OS with no other background tasks, then you really want to avoid running out of phyiscal ram.

EQ2 for instance is dire at memory handling, and often hits 1.2gig memory, including an 'average' XP installation. 2Gig's ram advised. On the other hand, after playing World of Warcraft all day, my systems 'Peak' is 700megs, so in that case more ram would not speed it up, infact it could potentially slow it down slightly.

Thanks all, I have now found it is my HD. The ram weren't a problem, as the games I had it in all ran fine on the system with a gig of ram.
