Problems using Ati Tool & Ati Tray Tool

I had Ati tray tools working perfectly with 2 different driver versions and then I started having problems when starting windows. On start up Ati Tool would as normal load up first and then as CCC attempted to load my monitor would go black - signal loss. This problem got worse, to point when it happened every time I booted Windows. When I uninstalled Ati Tool CCC had no problems loading.

In an attempt to rectify the problem I uninstalled Ati drivers with Driver Cleaner and reinstalled the latest Ati drivers and Ati Tool following the same procedure I used for the previous successful installation. Windows loaded no problems and disabled the Ati services in Windows (Ati polling) and overclocked, set voltages and fan speeds via Ati Tool. I ran 3dMark 05 with no issues but as soon as I tried to play a game my clocks would be reset to the very low 2d settings.

I uninstalled Ati Tool and then installed Ati Tray Tools so as to control my fan speeds. I overclocked via CCC but when I play games my 3d overclock is reset to the low 2D settings.

I am confused as to why a once stable installation with Ati Tool gradually became unstable. The only thing I can think of is perhaps its something to do with my Tagan 480W power supply becoming less stable? Maybe not as I am able to successfully overclock to 590/800 using Ati's CCC Overdrive. The main reason I want use a third party utility is to control my fan speed as I am wary of the low default speeds and the high temps when overclocking.

Would using an Artic Cooling Accelero X2 cooler sort out the temps and would I be able to connect it directly to the PSU so as to have it running at 100%.

Anybody have any ideas as to why I am unable to use Ati Tool.

A) Remove drivers completely
B) Download Omega Drivers
C) Download latest ATi Tool BETA - 0.25 Beta 14.
D) Disable ATi Services.
E) Read my X1900 clocking thread if you haven't allready.

In some games with Intro videos (and videos in WMP + others) the ATi drivers reset to video clock speeds (500/600 or 2D) even without the services running - apparently its a bug, ATi still haven't fixed it, appeared in Cat 6.4. If this is the case you have to alt-tab out and set 3D clocks again.

CCC + ATi Tray Tools loosen mem timings, disable ATT overclocking settings.

the X2 cooler will reduce your temps a bit but not a massive amount - it does reduce the noise!! ;)

Using ATI tools - set the fan to 100% in there and that should do it.

Also read Concordes guide - it's perfect.

P.S Concorde - i am using the 6.7 drivers and the ATI tool 2D/3D switching thing seems to be fine (never worked before) - dumped the omega drivers.

Really? Nice. My bros got my X2 setup now, and the case its in is hardly "cool" :p So when I get Conroe in September hopefully ATi Tool will work perfectly, even tho it did work ok with 6.6 :)

Thanks

Nothing to do with game intro's as they are the same ones which were working just fine.

As I have already said I have done all the above and have had ATI Tool working perfectly for the past 5 months with various Ati drivers. I think your guide was the one I used originally. Without changing anything I started getting intermitted problems with CCC clashing with Ati Tool to point where I would loose the signal from the card.

The only thing I have not tried are the omega drivers but I doubt that will help as I am fairly sure it is not a driver issue. I suspect something may have changed hardware wise - my card or my power supply. I am getting decent clocks with overdrive but I do not like the high temperatures in this hot summer we are having.

The reason I suspect it may have something to do with my power supply is that I was having the same start up issues (loosing signal when CCC loaded) a couple of months ago which was rectified by connecting an additional power rail directly to the card. After about 6 weeks this problem came back.

Maybe overdrive is doing a better job at handling the voltages automaticaly than my settings in Ati Tool. The GPU voltage I was using for my X1900XTX for default and overclocked clocks was 1.42 Now when using Ati tool my clocks get re-set when loading a game to 400/600 (something like that - can't remember)

As I have posted I am having problems with Ati Tool so is there a way to get the X2 to run at 100% by connecting it directly to the PSU so as to avoid any software control of fan speeds. My PC is so damn noisy anyway so I do not mind running 100% all the time. This PC is only used for gaming and I used closed headphones.

It probably was if you were using Cat 6.4/6.5/6.6 I only noticed when I had 2 screens setup and I was watching 2nd speeds.

CCC + ATi Tool = crash. Simple as. Don't use it, if it worked in the past then you are lucky. The screen turning off is when the card crashes from too quicker voltage/settings change from ATi Tool and CCC.

Omega drivers are the best, they have an updated ATT for X1x00 cards if you want to use overdrive. If not you can disable the services and ATT overclocking (although the monitoring section is disabled aswell :()

If games work then this is not the problem. Your PSU should be enough but test the 5 and 12V lines from a molex to test, they have to be within 5%.

Yep, thats the bug. ATi Tool detects 3D, loads it up and then the drivers set the clocks back to 2D. Very, very annoying and often causes crashes. Infact I gave up with 2D/3D switching to use key commands for the settings I wanted.

ALT+F1 was 400/500 - 1.1/1.900/1.900/1.487V for low 2D 24/7
ALT+F2 was 500/700 - 1.2/1.950/1.950/1.187V for low 3D (EVE Online, old 3D games - 9.5k 2005)
ALT+F3 was 670/810 - 1.45/2.050/2.050/1.580 for full 3D.

Worked a treat :)

CR.

EDIT: ATi Tool + ATT can set fan speeds too (needs omega drivers tho ;) :)

Thanks for the helpful and detailed reply.

Concorde Rules that was a good read, i found it useful :)

Can you give me a link to your overclocking thread as i'm having a bit of trouble clocking my card and i couldn't find your thread anywhere

Thanks

I tried the Omega's over the weekend and still no luck. Whatever utility I use causes my clocks to be reset to the 2d speeds. I am fairly sure I am doing it correctly as it was working perfectly before it became unstable. I have given up and have now set my card to stock speeds in Ati's CCC. I am still trying to find out if I can connect my fan directly to PSU so as to run it at 100% or possibly fitting an Accelero X2 cooler.

I will leave this as life's unexplained mysteries.
