Problems using GPRS on iPhone

I have an unlocked iPhone with an ASDA mobile PAYG sim in it. I have entered the correct APN settings and when the E is displayed next to signal, safari works and so does Pingchat but eBuddy will not log in. When there is a dot next to the signal bar (GPRS?) no network enabled apps work at all, I don't even get things pushed to me.

Anyone got any idea?

remember, GPRS is slow as hell (think 56k slow) so the iPhone probably disconnects when you're only synced at GPRS so that it doesn't get a reputation for slow internet from people who don't know better.

Works for my friend using a 3GS when he only had GPRS signal, so I don't understand
