Problems with 8800 GTS and PSU

I have a BFG 8800 GTS 640MB and I've been having problems with setting up DualView. After speaking to BFG they suggested it may be a problem with the power supply not having enough juice, so I've bought a 550W PSU.

I've had another problem though and this suggestion has got me wondering if it may have been caused by the PSU so I was wondering what some of you thought.

While playing Half Life 2 on the recommended settings I sometimes get flashing white and yellow shapes across the screen, this is usually followed by my computer freezing. I've tried switching off HDR and the problem happens less often. I've been thinking though if it's possible that the graphics are making power demands that the PSU can't meet and this causes the shapes and subsequent freezing.

Is this possible or is it not a symptom of a unmeetable power supply?

It could be a PSU issue, a cooling issue, or bad memory on the graphics card. Assuming you bought a decent 550W PSU then that'll take one thing out of the equation.

I couldn't really say how to distinguish between bad memory on the graphics card and overheating, since the way I'd test for either of these is to put a lot of load on the card and see if it hangs.

What you might want to do is try ATi Tool. I know it's not an ATi card you have, but if my memory serves right, there's a stress test on that, and it pretty much limits it to stressing the graphics card. Again though, I wouldn't know how to distinguish between a memory and a heat issue.

BFG have said that if I can't solve the DualView problem with a new PSU then they'll replace the graphics card so I always have that chance to check out the card itself.

One thing I was wondering though was is it likely that the recommended settings in Half Life 2 would be higher then my GPU could actually handle? Switching off HDR does seem to reduce the frequency of the problem but at the same time I don't see any reason why my card shouldn't be fine with HDR.

Depending on what resolution you're at, your graphics card should be able to handle anything. If you're in 1280x1024 for example, you should be able to turn everything on.

I always thought that would be the case but for some reason at 1280x1024 HL2 recommends the lowest Anti-Aliasing setting. Now I'm wondering if it's being over cautious.

I run a gainward 8800gts everything maxed out on HL2 at 1680x1050. The card can handle it for certain. The PSU is another thing . . . Theres only one way to be sure, and thats to start testing hardware.
