i was given a dead laptop to remove the hard drive and to add it to the persons system, how ever this didnt work and wouldn't boot on its own, or as a slave.

so i thought i would try an ext case and just use the usb, so i have fitted the hard drive in, plugged the usb in and the power usb, lights r on, but my computer will not load it and it won't display in my computer, or partition magic.

any help would be great.

Sounds like a dead hdd tbh, at the end of the day if u connect it to a USB enclosure and put it on a working XP Pc and it doesnt even detect... its dead

You can always confirm it by putting your ear towards the hdd and hear if its spinning? or right click my computer>Manage>Disk managment> and check if its listed under Disk ?

Also make sure you are connecting it to the right USB port. Sometimes the ones on the front of a case might not be powerful enough. Also, you may need the USB cable to have 2 USB connectors as it may take 2 to power it up.

hi, i've tried it using both usb cables in front of case and at the rear with windows not loading it, and in disk management it does not appear.

the disk hasnt been formatted as i wanted to get a few bits of data from it first and i thought it would just load the HD as data as this is the case when i put in a normal hard drive with an OS on.
