Greetings,
Bought 3x 2GB Kits off the "This Week Special" and I'm having difficulty running the memory on either the P5B & DS4 at default voltage and default clock. I have lost 1 install and had problems installing with this memory.

The question I'm asking do I need to crank the voltage up to 2.1 Volts to run at the rated SPD spec with everything on Auto?

If this is the case what is normal on the DS4 with regard to voltage. Is Normal 1.8 volts? If I have to overvolt the voltage I need to know the reference because its all 0.X over reference.

Its looking like the memory needs more voltage even running at 533 which is what it was defaulting at.

Is this the norm with DDR2? Do you have to raise the voltage even when not overclocking?

I'm use to DDR and AMD system where you just put the memory in and it runs fine at default.

no 2.0 volts the p5b lets you set the volts up to 2.1

Sorry I'm in DS4 mode where its + volts over reference. I though you where saying 2 volts over reference which would mean 3.8 volts.

Yep the Asus just lets you specifiy the voltage directly.

So to make your ram work at the default speed you need to set it to 2 volts which is 0.2 over normal.?

Default for DS3/DS4 is 1.8v, so +0.3v would bring you up to 2.1v

I thought ref was 1.8. :)

How the hell is joe bloggs going to get a working system thats what I want to know. !? Because just putting the memory in wont get a stable system.

Is this the case with all DDR2 memory?

Didnt have an issue with my G Skill HZ

GSKill HZ for the win. I'm not envious that I missed out on the GeiL offers!

I'm running:

E6600 @ 3.2Ghz
DS4 (F3 BIOS)
4GB PC6400 Ultra Low Geil @ 1 : 1 4-4-4-12

There are absolutely no voltage overclocks in my system at all and this is 100% stable.
I don't mind playing with FSB settings, memory ratios and dividers etc.
However I don't like playing with voltages - I know people have shown it's safe etc.
I just like to keep voltages as they should be.

The Geil modules ran fine at stock when I put them in (the SPD set them with very slack timing though).
Very pleased I decided to over-fill my current memory needs while the price was so low.

Out of the 3 sets I have 2 have problems running at stock. One set seems fine. Looks like some of the modules need more juice than others

HI there

They are rated for upto 2.3v m8. When I tested a set I just bung them straight in at 2.2v no messing. Its possible GeIL have chips that preferre higher voltages as I did notice that even though I was running 2.2v they were cool to the touch. :)

Hey m8,
Yes they all seem to work fine at 2.2 and just like CPU's some seem to work better than others at lower voltages. Your right at 2.2 they are like you say cool running.

Its just a pity that the higher voltage is not set automatically by the motherboard ( Like SPD ) because I can see that some people will have problems if they don't realize the volts have to be upped. What with this and a dodgy SATA cable its caused me some headaches today.

Did you manage to set your timings to 4-4-4-12 with stability?

Its currently set on auto @ 400 FSB = 800. CPUID reports 5,4,4,18 which is definately different to F3B which reported 3,4,4,18 in CPUID

My little speed demon has been demoted to my new Media Center and 2.8 its all I can manage without the case melting.

Pretty amazing processor I have undervolted by 0.2 and its ortho stable at 2.8.
