Hello guys,

I'v got a problem with my new build. I finished building it about moth ago, everything was working fine. Today my computer started to act strange, when i restart it, BIOS only shows 4gb mem, when i boot to win i can see that there is 6gb but it also says that just 4gb usable this i can see in Windows/system...
CPU-Z also shows that there is 6gb mem, but SIS Sandra shows only 4gb also dxdiag detects 6gb... it's not only problem i'v got with it, after i finished building my pc i tried to turn it on, but it didn't POST, so i swapped ramm channels and everything was working ok till today. should i send my MB for RMA? i tend to think that my mem controllers might be faulty :( i'm trying to find a way to flash my bios, maybe it will help...
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Only thing I can think of is run mem-test on each memory module and see if that brings up any errors.

The memory controller is on the cpu, what voltage did you set the ram to.

i ran mem tests on all of them, no errors have been found. so now i'm stuck into the wall. The only thing that i can think of is to send back to shop where i bought it....
 
Hi mate,

I spent about 3 months stressing out over this exact same issue, I RMA'd my mobo twice, and my CPU twice as well, and every single time they were tested, it came back to me with no faults found!!

In the end the kind guys here at OcUK swapped my chip for me, and when I installed the new chip into my system the problems dissapeared, and everything has been fine ever since.

However, after getting the replacement chip, someone from XtremeSystems contacted me telling me not to RMA my chip, and to try fitting a different HSF instead, as he was having identical issues as me, and also RMA'd lots of hardware only to get told they weren't faulty as well, in the end, he found that it was something to do with the mounting bracket for his cooler, he loosened up the screws slightly, and the problem cleared up.

When I got my replacement chip, I ended up fitting a different cooler so it could very well have been my old Zalman 9700NT mounting bracket that was causing the issue for me as well, because like I said, when I RMA'd the mobo, and the processor, they both were tested thoroughly, and were found not faulty, but as soon as I got them back and tested them, the 4GB issue was still present.

One other thing though, I can actually replicate this problem with my current setup, I noticed it the other day, when I was trying to tighten up my mem timings, if I set the timings to tight, my system only sees 4GB instead of 6, but as soon as I put timings back to stock, all 6GB is recognized again.

Out of curiousity, which HSF are you using atm?
 
Now i'm using Magehalems with 2x apache coolers, i tried to loosen screws a bit but it didn't helped. that somehow to my head came idea to put ramm in random slots, and now i can see that i'v got 6gb mem again (bios, windows, cpu-z and etc..) i also found that 4mem channel isn't working and if i'm using it my system doesn't recognize 2gb of ramm. as i wrote in my first post i can't get mem to work while it's installed in blue channel.
 
The RAM is supposed to be installed in the white slots mate, not the blue ones...

When I had this issue, it was the first white slot nearest the CPU that wasn't detecting my RAM, this is what made me think it was my mobo that was bricked, but like I said, once I got the replacement chip from the techs here, I installed into my system, and used a different HSF, and I haven't had the 4GB problem since.

I ended up going out and buying extra RAM, and another X58 motherboard because of this issue, you can imagine how frustrated I was when I tested the new board, and new DIMM's only to find the problem was still present!!!

As I said though, when using 3 sticks of RAM, you need to install them into the white slots to get it running in triple channel, the way you have it running atm will mean it is running in dual channel.

If you try installing 3 sticks in the blue slots, the board wont even POST..

Another thing you can check mate, take out the CPU and look for any bent pins in the CPU socket, this problem can be caused by bent pins as well, I forgot about that..

Reseating the CPU again might also clear it up.

Yeh i checked for those bent pins, and there are like 8 of them that are bent :/ i just can't imagine how that could happen... some of them still looks like they'r in position but one looks kinda weird. what should i do now???
 
That's definitely your problem mate.

I've had success bending pins back into place using a small jewellers screwdriver, but that was only 2 pins I had to bend back, and they weren't bent to badly.

I've heard that bent socket pins arenot covered by warranty from some manufacturers.

I really don't know what to suggest to you mate, I don't want to tell you to try and bend them back yourself incase you end up snapping them!!!

They were either bent when you got the board, or you bent them yourself when fitting the processor.

If you don't feel confident about trying to bend them back yourself, you should just contact Gigabyte and hopefully they can help you out.
 
I i told before, just one pin looks bad. others looks bent a bit but still sitting nice in the line... now i'll contact my shop, if they wont help me, will try contacting Gigabyte. hopefully will sort this thing up...
 
I'd definitely take it back to the place of purchase mate, hopefully they will be kind enough to give you a replacement board, if not, I am sure Gigabyte will be able to help you out.
