Hello forum peeps,

I just wanted to post this as I am having major issues with a PC I bought from OcUK. All the parts were recommended to work together and from the sounds of a lot of people on this forum they have very similar setups.

Here is my Spec: (all parts were brought from OcUK).

Intel Core 2 Quad Extreme Edition QX9650 "LGA775 Yorkfield" 3.00GHz (1333FSB) - Retail
Coolermaster Real Power 1000w Modular Power Supply
Coolermaster Stacker 830 Evolution Nvidia Special Edition Case - Black (No PSU)
Zalman CNPS9700-NT nVidia Tritium CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940/AM2/LGA775)
BFG GeForce 9800 GX2 1024MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail
Asus Striker II Extreme nForce 790i Ultra SLi (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard
Corsair 4GB DDR3 DHX 1600C7DHX Twin3X (2x2GB) (TWIN3X4096-1600C7DHX)
Western Digital Raptor 150GB 10000RPM SATA 16MB Cache - OEM (WD1500ADFD)

I have set the memory on the motherboard to be unlinked, to enable the 7-7-7-20 Timings and the 1600mhz speed with 1.90v on the memory on the board.

Now Here is my Issue:

When playing any game on this system (was brought for high end gaming) after a short time the machine freezes with sound looping, sometimes it BSOD then rebooted or sometimes it just rebooted if left long enough.

After sending the Memory back to OcUK (after running memtest86 I discovered the memory was faulty). So that cured one problem, no longer did the machine crash and cause a BSOD.

However the random freezing with looping sound in games and rebooting still occured.

My First thought was to update drivers - that didnt fix the problem
Secondly I did a bios Update. now running 1106 on the Striker II Extreme. - That didnt fix the issue.
I purchased Windows Vista 64bit (due to the memory only showing 2.75gig on Windows XP (32bit)).
So I downloaded all the latest drivers and reformatted. - Still the same problem, freeze then reboot.

I really was at a loss, someone suggested it was the OS, being too new even though the parts were only brought last May.

So I reformatted and installed Windows XP (32bit), and this time put the drivers that came with the motherboard and BFG grahpic's card in. - Still crashed and froze.

I had looping sound and a freeze then a reboot at this point. I removed my sound card (sound blaster) and put in the Striker II Extreme HD Soundcard.

I checked the windows system logs, using the event manager; This showed a nvidia error with the GPU. So i followed up on some nvidia forums and got told the graphics card may be faulty, and this is the cause of the freezing.

Error Message:
Unknown error on CMDre 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000001 00000001 The driver nv4_disp for the display device \Device\Video1 got stuck in an infinite loop

I even changed the ports on the PCI-E slots to see if that solved the problem, it did not.

So Last friday I sent back the graphics card to OcUK, with all RMA and details of what nvidia had told me. So to minimise the downtime, I brought the new BFG GeForce GTX 295 1792MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (BFGRGTX2951792E) from OcUK.

However now I have the same problem with this graphics card. Firstly i did all the correct methods of installation, I reformatted just after I installed the card, that way I would have any driver conflicts etc.

I put windows Vista 64bit back in as the card is newer than the OS, with the drivers from the website (all the latest ones). Now playing anygame in window mode freezes the computer. I get a sound loop at the same time still.

Thinking again this could be the striker II's HD sound card i removed the card, reformatted and still have the same problem.

I have tried both combinations of the PCI-Ex16 slots, both have the same issue. Is this the motherboard thats at fault?

I have ordered a new motherboard, this time gone with the new intel chipset instead of the nforce one. However if the board is faulty which is the better board? Asus Rampage Extreme Intel X48 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard

Basically once again i am now building a second rig, to be able to test the parts properly, but I am having a feeling I will send the motherboard back to OcUK anyway. I know lots of people with the same GFX card and the same mobo that do not have these issues, it seems to always happen to me.

Its a rather expensive way to go about building one rig. Short of driving down to OcUK to talk to their technical department with the PC I do not know what I am doing wrong, or if its just my luck with faulty parts.

Anyone care to shed some light on the situation, or advice?

lol not really i wish, I just want a working PC :/

Ive copied this to the other forums Randal, thanks for the advice.

To follow up: I spoke to the techincal guys today, when I get back from work I should be able to identify the issue further after being advised to run Prime95 and HD Tune. Apparently it could even be the Hard Disk :o

Try changing the volatages on your ram, Ive had a similer problem with an asus board and corsair ram, every 20-30 mins would spak out in same way. after tweeking voltages works absolutely fine.

yes im running standard, I would not attempt to overclock till i had a stable system.

I have also ran the memory at standard [Auto] during all attempts as well as the recommended values.

Memory is both at 1333Mhz [Auto] and recommended settings of 1600 [Unlinked]

I have the CPU core at default settings unlinked which is 1333FSB

Edit: All i wanted was to play a 4 year old game, on full graphics :p

I'd be very tempted to troubleshooting without everthing being so demanding, simplify it and hopefully you may find the component that faulty or incompatible..

Do games work with a crappy cheap card (would tend to point to power supply issues or the mobo)

Do some detailed scans of the disc using a diagnostic, change the sata port and cable if you can.

Does it work with memory only in 1 channel (possible mobo or socket errror)

When OcUK sent me the wrong memory the second time I had the chance to run memtest86 on that memory as well, both times on the current and the old memory the 2gb and the newest 4gb worked fine and passed even on a constant check (ran continuous over night). It was only the first set of ram that was faulty.

I will check tonight after running Prime95 and HD tune, see what results I get. New mobo was shipped today, should get that 2moz fingers crossed =]

Hard drive seemed to pass the quick test on HD Tune, and ive ran a few torture tests using Prime95. Gonna do further tests now I am at home. After talking with the staff at OcUK they think it might be the motherboard if these tests pass.

I used to have very similiar problems on one of my old P4 systems (freeze & reboot after short time of use) and it turned out to be the mobo.

With all due respect you didn't buy a PC from OcUK you bought a collection of parts that YOU TRIED to make into a PC.
Having read all your post you even say yourself that "It Always happens to You"
Also hitting the R key whilst typing a B or an O is most unlikely so therefore I deduce that you cannot openly admit your own mistakes, Mmmmmmmmmm. Is it worth my time typing a responce or will you ignore that as well ?

Sorry to be so pedantic but I have learnt to choose who to commit my personal time to :)

Ok, Seeings as I am feeling guilty now Start by stripping the system completly & building it with Minimum parts on your desk.

Also in your post you state that you upgraded to Vista because Xp showed limited memory, Does this mean the components/system ran fine on XP ???

malc30 i wasnt being totally specific by saying I bought 8 parts from OcUK and found some thing wrong with one,two or maybe more more parts. It was just a title to see if anyone could lend a hand.

"It always happens to me" was in reference to my bad luck.
Typo meaning I typed the wrong word, not misspelled necessarily.

I must admit your ability to be finicky with my forum post shows you have already committed your personal time to this topic, of which I am grateful.

I have stripped the system to the bare-bone. Tested two different sets of memory, and I have now completed a HD Tune test, which came back 100% green (clear). I am now considering my other options.

Xp shows limited memory as it does not support 4GB or ram, which i am sure you are aware of. However I had and contiune to have the same problems both in Vista and Windows XP. The main reason for me upgrading to vista was the fact that it supports the memory. Some might argue that it defeats the object as Vista uses more memory; However it also makes my computer future proof for newer drivers etc. on the 64bit platform.

So in short, I am almost going to conclude that the motherboard is at fault here. What do you think?
