Problems with Kies

So I'm trying to update the firmware on my Galaxy S... Connect it, detect newer version available, tick the box, click update, and after 10 secs of unresponsiveness, it just comes up 'Lost connection to i9000' in the bottom right and the program freezes up completely. Uninstalled and reinstalled on another HDD with no luck. Help?

Make sure stuff like windows live messenger isn't interfering.

have you taken out your sd card? ( if you have one)

Are you still using TouchWiz or have you changed the phone launcher to launcherpro or ADW etc? Kies needs touchwiz to be active to work.

Didn't have one in, still didn't work.

Haven't changed any of that kinda software, not even sure what TouchWiz is

It wouldn't have detected it at all without having touchwiz, I think.

Worth ruling out. Doesn't sound like it's the problem though!
