Spec :

Asus K8V
AMD 3800+
Primary HDD : Samsung IDE
Secondary HDD : Maxtor 6Y160M0 SATA
OS : Windows XP Professional

Problem :
The system boots perfectly as long as the Maxtor is not plugged in.
The problem started to occur this morning, I received an 'I/O Error' message in windows whilst attempting to uncompress a rar file on the Maxtor drive. I rebooted, and the system now hangs just after the Windows loading screen. The screen normally turns black at this point then the login screen appears. It now remains on the black screen.

The Maxtor drive appears in the bios.
Using the recovery console, I can perform the DIR command on the Maxtor drive successfully.
I have tried both SATA ports.
I have run CHKDSK on both drives.
The jumper settings on the Maxtor are set to slave.

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated as there is a lot of information on this drive which I would rather not lose.

Thanks in advance.
