I wouldn't buy AMD as they're behind with manufacturing technology AFAIK. Suprisingly not much difference between the i3 and the pentium, but that'll be down to Intel's branding machine. I'd go for the i3 if budget allows for it - it's a dual core with hyperthreading, so may be a little faster.
That's the misleading thing about Intel branding. The Pentium brand was reused for low end CPUs, but this Pentium was launched 6 months after the i3 part. Low end doesn't always mean they're older technology. I'm guessing they're very similar design, but the Pentium has some advanced features removed or disabled.
