EDIT: Assumed you were asking advice :p

I'm a terrible procrastinator. CoD MW or MW2 (Forget which) came out as I was revising for my A-Levels. My self control was so low it damn near tanked my grades, ended up failing to get into Liverpool Uni and settled elsewhere instead. On the bright side, this taught me a valuable lesson about it, and so I knuckled down at Uni and came out with a first.

Do wish I would have learned earlier and tanked my GCSE's instead though, some ridiculous employers still have minium UCAS points (A-Level results) even when you've got a really good degree.

The fact that i'm typing this, at work says I do.

Problem I find is that I have so many interests in life that I alwaysh ave something I'd rather be doing - and I usually just do that without even thinking about it.

I study through the OU and leave it all to the last minute. I get more done when under pressure anyway, it's just how I work so I have no tips to stop doing it - I just accept it and know I'll get it done eventually!

If I try to do the boring task early, I'll end up faffing about and take twice as long. When I have 3 hours to do 10 hours of work, I'll do it in 2.5 hours and get 95%

So...not much help at all but it's an issue many people have. Too many fun things to do in your spare time it's hard not to.

Yep dissertation due 6th May, only 500 words written so far, keep getting distracted

I have no idea what i have been doing, i only did 1,000 words in 4 months. But just done 3,000 words in the past 2 days. (It's in this wednesday)

The worst part is, i know i'm procrastinating when i should be working. When i was on placement there's that little bit of pressure to keep me focused. But left to my own devices I'm hopeless and only kick in when i start flapping. :(

It's not really laziness, it's actively doing the wrong tasks to avoid the one you should be doing. Finding the motivating point of the task, if indeed there is one, usually snaps one out of it.

Ah so stupidity then :)

I had it myself as a young man and I see it a lot these days when I interview.. a lot of young people men in particular tend to put things off and are generally uninterested.. I think this only changes once they get commitments like a family.. I know this was true in my case... having more than just myself to look after really changed my outlook on life..

Finding a job/subject in which you have a natural passion is a great way to beat procrastination from a work/career perspective.

Personally, if I have at least some passion for what I'm doing it doesn't even feel like work (even if the task at hand is boring).

I mean, last night I spent a huge amount of time debugging tables for a few of my Mods on the steam workshop, creating new textures, hex-editing the models, layer masks - teaching myself how to create normal maps while researching ancient history for inspiration for new creations.

If companies could find a way to make more aspects of a job 'fun/interesting or passion inducing' productivity would sky-rocket.

I sat my As levels last year after starting to play dota only a few months before. Last week i just bought a WoW subscription and have my A2s beginning on the 14th of may. The way i deal with procrastination is when i get off on study leave i go into school from 9:00 until 1:00 that way i have done 4 hours of revision rather than sitting at home doing tiny bits of revision in between watching youtube and playing games.

I assume for 1st to 3rd year they are in school intil mid june, if your school is open and go in and revise there you will get more work done than you will sat at home, i did for my AS levels and got ACC, the 2 Cs were 4 marks and 6 marks off a B, so all i need this year is a little more effort to get ABB and then off to uni

I might nick your idea and force my sons to do similar if it proves necessary, ta.

This works for me. I have to be at uni to do productive work being at home tells me that it's time to rest . Only downside is that getting a computer at uni is quite competitive. Sometimes avoiding going with friends helps as they can be equally as much as a distraction.

Like today I'm doing maths. I hate maths. Once I get myself started it's ok, but actually sitting down and starting is the hard part. But with other subjects, like physics for example, I find its not such a problem, because I'm actually interested in the topic.

I'll read that article later when I've finished doing my god damned maths...

Physics is maths and if you want to do physics/maths/engineering at university you had better start enjoying it :P

you see this is what im worried about next year is i have chosen one uni that i can stay at home and travel to and another that i will need accommodation for, if i chose the one that i can travel to from home i'm wondering if i will get work done. the only way i can see me getting work done is if i buy a desk to put in the spare room and work there away from my gaming computer

I don't any more, I have done.

It's like anything, you just need to force yourself until it sticks, work through the mental torture. Stop making excuses.

I'm very specific about my work environment and how I approach things because they make it easier to concentrate on the task in hand, sleep pattern, routine, moderating caffeine and sugar intake. Tend to make sure the lighting is right and I have sufficient space to conduct my work - of course this isn't always possible in an office sadly but if you ever work from home you'll be appreciative of this change to a productive environment.

Depends on the university and the resources they have. We have the fortunate situation where our library is now 24/7 which eases the congestion and also gives the opportunity of working overnight. Having friends who are competitive with each other for good grades is ideal and if you're at the uni early you're guaranteed a computer as well.

Despite that i did loads of work but kept putting off the dissertation, which has put me in the position where I am now... :(
