Product Keys for games

Happened to me when I bought Counter Strike when I was a kid. Got my dad to ring the shop up and the guy gave us about 10 codes to try until one finally worked :o
 
Apart from my bad luck posted above, I once had the opposite and got 2 keys by mistake.

Bought the OFP GOTY installed the main game, typed my cd key into a word document for back up, a day later decided to install/play the expansions and I kept getting disc errors. Took it back to the shop with the idea of just swapping the one faulty disc, but obviously they had to swap the whole package, including the manual/cd key. Took me a couple of months to notice that I now had two keys :D
 
Had it with never winter nights 2 that came with one of my video cards. Also had it with Server 2008 (not a game) but the key didn't work.

Hmmm. That seems open to abuse if one was so inclined.

Say scallywag number 1 buys Left4Dead and registers the key on Steam. He then retuns to the shop with the boxed game saying the disc won't work and gets it replaced. He can the pass on the new key to scallywag number 2 and have some online co-op fun when not out drinking cider in parks and keying cars.

Is there an easy way to damage a disc without making it obvious?:p

Break the CD/DVD tabs in the case and rattle the game around for 1/2 an hour - look as if it was shipped in transit that way.... absolutely no way to tell!

I used to work in a games retail shop and in the end it became so obvious what was going on we opened the new game and gave the disk to the customer so they didn't have a new key....... soon stopped that trick!


Had that with one of the Medal of Honor games personally

Also had the same problem with neverwinter nights, on my first key. Photo of manual and got a new one, but since it seems that many others have the same problem I presume it was just a bug in NWN/gamespy?

I just came back into this thread to edit out my post as I thought better of giving people naughty ideas but as it's got a reply now I might as well leave it.
