Hi all,

at college someone was suggesting that there is a program out there that will make adsl download faster.

personally, I cant understand how it can as the line has to sync at a particular speed and thats what you are limited to download wise...I know you can tweak the MTU etc, but actually getting more kb/s at downloading?? possible?

thanks,
ghgh

There are tweaks to improve TCP/IP performance but you can't make the line go faster than the physical sync rate. In fact, you will always get a fair bit under what you physically sync at due to overheads.

I think what they were refering to is net caching and compression services. Some companies offer software where each time you request an internet site, they download and cache the page, then compress it and send it to you where it's uncompressed.
In theory, it's not a bad idea, however its only really useful for basic text/html etc, as coding and media become more advanced and prevalent, they're becoming less and less useful, as there's little benefit gained from the compression services.

These sort of services are often sold under the auspices of 'Net Accelerator' programmes :)

What they were likely referring to is the ability to tweak your modem/router's target SNR. Some modems/lines can stay connected at lower SNRs than your ISP set as a target. It is quite possible for some users to lower their SNR to get connected at a higher sync rate so that they might get stepped up to the next BRAS profile. The application most people use for this is DMT Tool.
