Programmers?

And was also curious about COBAL, just not a language I'd heard of.

Seriously??

COBOL has been around since God was a lad, but it's still *extensively* used in business and commerce. Not for new devs, but there are lot of systems that have been running for 20+ years that will probably continue to run for plenty more.

If you were COBOL developer in 1998/1999, it was a licence to print money, courtesy of the 'Y2K bug'. I knew a guy that quit his local govenment job in 1998 (probably earning around £25k), did 2 years of contracting and then bought his own restaurant with the proceedings. Minted. Lucky B******d.

Edit: Oops - taking the mickey - I getcha...:o

~J~ was probably just pointing out my typo.

And yes, COBOL programmers were laughing for Y2K. A guy I used to work with was contracting for £2k a day in 98/99.

It's just a discussion forum, if that's what you mean. Usually they are "help me" threads, but also any big announcements or people probing for info about the industry etc. etc. goes on.

Some people tried to start projects in the past, but they never really got started - most of us are employed as programmers and so generally, I guess, don't want or cba to do more programming in their spare time.

some nice tutorials from some of gurus would be nice :)

what would you say is the best language to learn if you would like to getting into programing as a career move? and the timescale to achieve this. In current climate I want to try and explore some different things in case my current job ceases to exist.
Currently working as colour matcher for a large multinational automotive refinish company and as you can guess the work is slowing up. I have done some coding C++ whist i was at college doing my hnc in software engineering in 2001 but was unable to carry on after 1st year due to stuff that happened in my life. I am currently trying to pick up c# so i have plenty of enthusiasm for this.

I'd disagree there. I think the majority here are amateurs, with just a few professionals here and there. SA's CoC is full of professionals though: they really know their stuff.

Edit: as for myself:

C#/VB.NET (3 or 4 years)
PHP (4 or 5 years)
VB6 (yuck)
A bit of Haskell (as a maths student I love this language )
A bit of C++
A tiny bit of Ruby

And of course HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc.

I know enought Perl, C# & C++ to be dangerous, and I suppose that's about it
I can quite happily build quite complex command-line stuff, but I've never managed to get a GUI (Other than Windows forms popups) to work properly.

Uni Games Dev student so I only program in C++, which I love lol. I've also programmed in other C-like languages such as C#, Java and PHP. I also dabble with Objective C as I work in an industrial placement developing small iPhone games.

I also code GLSL and a tiny bit of HLSL.

EDIT: To all the people listing HTML as a programming language, it isn't, so stop it! ;) :p

Wow not many mobile programmers here. I'm a professional Java ME programmer, although I cover most mobile devices so work in Objective C too.

What sort of programmers do we have here?...

Just wondering how i can contribute to the community and would like to get an idea of what you guys are about...

What is your primary language & Other Languages you use?
Hi. I can do (X)HTML and CSS pretty well. I should try and complement that with some PHP. I got some cheap Sitepoint PDF books I keep meaning to read sometime and put some PHP into practice.

I also didn't really get programming when I was at Uni and I'd like to have a go at Python and see what I could do with that and perhaps some C#. :)

Edit: How can i do a poll on here?
You can't. ;) You'd need to hope a don is passing by and notices your request for a poll, and some options, or that a kind, handsome UB, me in other words, would ask a don to make a poll for you. :D

Win Mobile programmer here :)

Been doing iPhone programming for a few months too, although it's quite a challange, harder than I thought (not the language, the API).

I would love to do some iPhone programming but i dont have an Apple :/... I heard some guy was making an IDE in windows for iPhone programming.

Well, primarily I use C++ and C#, I've also played around with Python and Ruby, and I also work with Visual Basic.NET a lot because of the work we do at college - we also covered Delphi.

Currently I'm doing a BND For IT Practitioners (software development), but I also program for leisure quite a lot at home, I've been focusing on 3D games programming lately with some open source SDK's (Irrlicht and Bullet Physics). My first language was JavaScript, DOM is great fun, and I've been doing a few bits and bobs in PHP to try and get to grips with it.
