Progress report

Can't wait to see next weeks news. The team is going from strength to strength. I'm umming an ahhing about a Q6600 to replace the e6300 that is keeping me ticking over at the moment.
 
Now that's an impressive way to get your 2 meg tiffy - an 11k PPD increase in your production. Looks like you've got everything on line now.

Pretty much. A couple of rigs are heat restricted but should have some Freezer 7s arriving today so may get a few hundred more PPD from them, apart from that, everything is pretty much up and running.

Tiffy will be displayed in a new thread soonish.
 
Right. The Freezer 7s arrived today. Got two of them fitted but not wothout incident.
I couldn't wait until one of the rigs finished it's WUs as it would have been two in the morning so I decided to take a chance - fatal error :( Got it fitted and rebooted, started the clients to check the temperature drop and both WUs died with over 50% progress :mad:
Pfaffed about for a bit trying to increase the OC but it looks like that old 965P-DS3 board is crap - can't get it to boot with a bus speed above 333MHz, so it's stuck at a maximum of 3.0GHz (9x333). Think I'll have to get another couple of GA-P35-DS3L boards for that one and the gaming rig.

The other one went considerably better, dropping the temperature by around 15 degrees. Managed to increase the OC on that one from 3.24GHz to 3.5GHz currently running at 56C, full load, on 1.45V vcore. That makes two running at 3.5GHz (both of the rigs with the GA-P35-DS3L boards).

Will get the other one fitted tomorrow. Won't help with the OC on that rig as it's at 3.0GHz on an mATX board with limited overclocking capabilities but it will reduce the temps - currently running at around 80C :eek: (it's a B3 Q6600).
 
From what I read, it's worth considering the P31-DS3L mobos which would save a few quid over the P35s. It's not as if you need all the P35 features in a dedicated folding rig.

Do you know if the P31 OCs as good as the P35? It would be handy if it does as they are over £10 cheaper but I wouldn't want to compromise any potential overclock. The P35 boards I have both clock the Q6600s to 3.5GHz and it would be nice to get the other two to the same level.
 
I think the main difference between P31 and P35 is that P31 uses the old ICH7 southbridge. It also has major issues with double-sided memory DIMMs.
 
The EOC stats are useless

Because our average outputs are now very close, the EOC stats don't show that you're about to stomp me and start harrassing Gazzza. I'll be waving my sig around a disused airfield near Bognor today so I expect to find myself in cell 7 on my return. I'm packed up and waiting to be displaced.....

Been having some stability issues with a couple of rigs the last two days but their good now so back up to full production. Have ordered another couple of the GA-P35-DS3L mobos, to arrive on Tuesday. These are for the two rigs with the issues, the issues were mostly to do with me trying to force some more out of them as they were both underachieving due to being in crappy boards.

I have to go to Aberdeen on Tuesday night for a two day training course and then I'm off daaaarn saaaarf for a few days visiting friends. When I get back, I will be getting a good board for the gaming rig and a new cooler - am I right in thinking that the best air cooling around atm seems to be the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme, coupled with a good fan or are there better coolers out there?
 
Either that or the Tuniq Tower. There seems to be a 50/50 split of people who prefer one or the other so I guess that they are pretty similar performance wise.
 
The Ultra 120 is a better cooler... but can have issues with the bases meaning you need to lap it.. again this isnt difficult but its if you want that hassle... By laping I mean sanding the base till it looks something like:

Assumming your Q6600 are G0 stepping have average VIDs you can expect the following:

Freezer Pro (cheap n good): 3.3 to 3.4ghz
Tuniq Tower: 3.4 to 3.6ghz
Ultra 120 - Extreme: 3.5ghz + (3.6+ laped)

I run my rig 24/7 @ 3.825 on an Ultra 120, with 5 normal clients folding temps max out at around 55c and I only have my fans going at 40% (they are very powerful ones but still :) )

You might want to revise the above list a little Pneumonic. I have one of my G0s running at 3.5GHz under a Freezer Pro at about 60c (fan is on full).

Consensus seems to be that the 120 is slightly better so I'll probably go for that. I don't have a lapping kit but I may get one in future if I feel I would gain from it.

Any recommendations for fans? How about the faster Yate Loons? Noise isn't really too much of an obstacle, I'm not particularly sensitive to noise - having said that, I'll not be packing a Delta in there - been there, done that :p
 
well you say no delta's :) but I have three in my machine and they are not loud at all for day-to-day use.. from what I can see UK e-tailers only stock one type if you go to the US site that stocks the whole range you can buy some powerful fans that arent quite as insane as the model thats stocked in the UK.. For a heatsink you want a fan that produces a high static pressure.. are some reviews around will have a look for you

In regards to temps :) those were ruff figures taken from the Q6600 thread.. if you have a nice low VID G0 then you might get a little more :) and ofcorse it depends on case airflow and ambient temp :)

Lapping kits.. do a google for "heatsink lapping kit premium" and you will find a really nice and cheapish kit that I always use :) shame tbh that OCUK dont stock them
 
I suppose the Deltas are only loud at full speed - would probably be nice to have the capability for benching and then turn it down for everyday use.

I've always wondered why OcUK don't stock lapping kits, considering it's a shop geared towards performance and overclocking :confused:

I'll have a look for that one you suggest and maybe look at getting one.
 
If you're not fussed about the Arctic Ceramique and you're quite confident you can find a small sheet of glass (cheap clip photo frame should do) then you can get a lapping kit for a few quid from an auction site.

The kit mentioned above does look quite comprehensive but at almost £15 when you include delivery it's a tad steep for some wet'n'dry :o
 
there are cheaper alternatives there :) but tbh assumming you are careful I have found each kit will do a CPU and Heatsink with no problems :) The kits come with very detailed instructions which are excellent for first time lappers and as you say comprehensive range of grits which lets you get a really nice finsh..

If you are looking for just a flat surface is probably best to pop down to your local hardware store and just pickup some 400/600/800 paper.. you can add some 1000/1200 if you want a shinnier finish

Delivery is a bit of an arse true but I have always brought them with other items so hasnt been an issue.
 
OK. A further update.

Didn't get the new boards last week due to some supply problems but got them delivered whilst I was away.

Put a new board in the rig with the B3 last night but still can't get it further than 3.0GHz. Never mind, I used the board from that along with some RAM and a hard drive I'd bought to resurrect the E6300. I'm currently trying to get it stable at 3.15GHz - which isn't too shabby.

I have two motherboards to change today which should let me OC the other two G0s a fair bit more. Putting one of the other G0s in a GA-P35-DS3L and changing the dodgy P5N32 board in the gaming rig for a P5K PRO and replacing the tired old Ninja with a shiny new Ultra-120 Extreme with a Yate Loon D12SH-12 (Deltas are out of stock).

I'll update again once I've finished playing.
