This is my progress thread for the website i am making for a client on my work based project at college. I will no doubt need frequent help throughout the next 10 weeks so i decided to have 1 thread where i will ask my questions.

First of all, i have used xhtml and asp to design websites based on templates. Which language do you think i'm best using to create a bed and breakfast website that contains a content management system?

My friend says he can sort me a webserver for a year for £40 with 2gb, is this a good deal? He wanted to know which language i was going to use and i only know how to create a login system using ASP

There is way too little information there to be able to tell you if that is a good deal. What's the £40 for, per month, per year? What does the 2GB mean? Hard disk space, RAM, Bandwidth?

Depending on which language you choose you will need many other features such as:
-FTP Access
-Database Server (MySQL, MSSQL, PostgreSQL etc.)
-Server Side Scripting (ASP, PHP, JSP etc.)
-General Administration (email, domains etc.)

You will also need to know specifics about the server software such as the operating system and detailed information about the server software and configuration. It is very difficult to develop something like a PHP application without knowing what version you writing for and also what configuration is in place (and if you have the permission to change the configuration).

Its FTP access 2gb disk space yearly £40 unlimited bandwidth. He says he can set it up on a windows server or anything else for me, this was for asp. Anything more you need? He also said domains were included

Depending on what your "client" is, IE is it a business? then I would most certainly opt for a dedicated hosting solution over a "mate" running a webserver if thats what you are referring too? unless he can offer good support. All depends on your clients needs and business criticality really though.

If you have a strict time limit in which to get this completed, e.g. the 10 weeks you mentioned, then I would definitely stick to what you know and use ASP. A paying customer is going to want something delivered on time and that works properly, so using what you know will provide the best chance of delivering that :)

As for hosting, what you friend is offering sounds good value for the money, but I would definitely get the lowdown on how reliable the hosting is etc - if he's running it off a server in his garage then I would politely decline :)

Just as a price guide, I have (shared) Windows ASP.NET hosting with eUKHosts and the package is 200mb disk space, 2gb monthly transfer and MS SQL databases for £40 a year (I think it's their Windows Copper hosting plan).

ok thanks for the advice, its not exactly a friend, its a referall from a friend and hes just being nice. My friend uses him and says uptime etc is fine. My client is a couple setting up a bed and breakfast. I am doing this for free and the college pays for the web hosting, atleast for the first year. Looks like asp it is

Hmmm, I would seriously concider proper hosting, you still didnt specifiy where its going to be located?

Im paying £35 a year for hosting with TSOHost which includes 2GB Diskspace, 10GB Monthly bandwidth, plus all the mods and cons, with the latest version of CPanel, plus its located in a datacentre. For a bed and breakfast website they are not exactly going to need unlimited bandwidth.

well i dont know what im asking for so it makes sense to go through a friend.
when i asked he said 2GB £40 1 YEAR

Balraj Singh says:
2GB is DISK SPACE
Balraj Singh says:
all you need to tell him is
Balraj Singh says:
2GB DISKSPACE
UNlimted Bandwidth
Unlimted email
Unlimted everythings else literally
Balraj Singh says:
for £40 a year

what do i need to ask for location?

It won't be unlimited for £40/year. Go with a well known, good provider such as TSOHost (above) etc.

Does he even say which provider it is with?

I stopped reading as soon as I saw the work "unlimited". No such thing as unlimited, trust me, there will be a limit.

a little ot but is this your girlie friend? she cute ;)

as for the site, i like it, think you should have a background image for when javascript is disabled and a standard css hover effect on the menu.

also the photo style box doesn't really work for the hosting page, reading text about hosting in a photo frame.

eidt: also in firefox when trying to make own package the oxes align terribly, very hard to tell which is meant for which

Hello all.

Just thought I'd drop in because I own acuteFX Design LTD and would like a word in ;) .

We offer web hosting from as low as £4.05 a month, and with packages up to 120GB storage and 800GB bandwidth. Some packages may be marked as "unlimited" on certain sites (this has never been written on acuteFX Design) but obviously, as all hosts.. we cannot garantee unlimited service. We have a limit in the thousands of GB transfer, which in some sense is almost unlimited because I am yet to find a site to use that quota.

Would also like to point out, that acuteFX Design can offer 2GB storage, 10GB bandwidth and full control panel / ftp access.. for £16.20 a year. If you require a little more, we can offer the same 2GB / 10GB with 5 email accounts, 2 databases and a second FTP account for £21.28 annually.

Our provider is Heart Internet, who are one of the larges and highest ranked hosting suppliers on the market.

Lastly, directed at Mammalian. I thank you for your comments and suggestions on acuteFX. As a loyal IE user I hadn't noticed the spacing error in firefox and will try to amend this as soon as I can.

For more information on any services acuteFX Design offers, please contact me at tom[at]acutefx.com.

Thanks.

Personally I wouldn't go with any web design company whose website used tables for layout, <center> tags and spacer GIFs!
