It's scary how much things have progressed since I sold my 'baby' last year.

Having been out of the computer scene since then, I'm gobsmacked to see some of the machines you can spec for so little money!
 
I have an old laptop kicking about. How easy would it be to utilise this instead of building a PC?
 
Well, you wouldn't have to build a computer up..


However, you'll need to sort out the power, and a way to turn it on and off remotely, and potentially automatically (I honestly don't know how I'd cope with having to turn my CarPC on manually every time I got into the car!)

Other than that, you just hook up an external screen/touchscreen, and whatever USB devices you require (GPS receiver, bluetooth etc)

Hibernate takes 10secs ish to desktop and the same to shutdown. Rarely need to properly shut down which is nice also. Great feature of XP imo.

Tell me about it mate, i finally got round to upgrading my 3-4 year old P4 system (lack of interest on my part, upgraded due to old system struggling with vista) and OMG my new system didnt cost that much and is literally around 10x faster on benchmarks. I really should upgrade more often!
 
sorry to bump this thread back up, but how did you get the pc to the amp and speakers, did you put it thru the headunit? or straight from the sound card?
 
The company i work for makes thin terminals (Wyse Technology) and in my lab i have a load of windows terminals, some of which run XPembedded!!
Some of the newer ones are great spec, so I think im going to look into getting an engineering sample setup in my car :)
I will let get some pics up when i start looking into it!
 
Let me know malt, i have quite a few V90 1ghz XP embedded wyse terms kicking about, would be cool to find a use for one :p
 
I had one guy send me back a terminal to be flashed (V90LE) and he is using it as an audi/video box for his living room! I knew cause he called the terminal LOUNGE, and had shortcuts to MOVIES MUSIC and a local media player on the client itself :p
 
Sound is very good I think, components up front with subs in boot. All amped.

The HU has 1 set of pre outs. The newer versions gtx510? or 500? (I think) have more sets.
