The psu will be external and attached to my desk :P Easy :) No room for a dual slot gfx card otherwise. Also, it's not a bad compromise as a lot of room is freed up as well as heat removed :). Thirdly, the internals should be less cluttered with a 'cleaner' look.

Here's another pic of what i mean. Because i'm rubbish at modding and i'm unwilling to spend any money on tools i'm just going to use once, i have to rely on both the materials i source and the tools i have already :)

I knew you did :P you can mount a sfx psu but obviously no room for gfx card. If they ever brought out v. powerful and short single slot cards or miniature closed loop water cooling for gfx cards, then i'd get a be quiet or silverstone sfx psu :)

Yeh, the back of the gfx card is a problem actually... still thinking of the best way to accomodate it properly! Have a semi-solution already but still thinking about a better one.. will see :)
 
thanks for the good suggestion :) My own idea is very similar to yours. I want to maximise cooling so will have to either do that very sparingly or attach these rubber 'thingies' to the back of the gfx card and let it 'rest'. If it's not too tight in there, i may be able to suspend it in a better way... will have to see. My rubber thingy solution gives it around 3-4mm clearance between the back of the card and the tray so i think that should be ok? :)
 
again, i might not even need to do that... my modding life has been made much much easier by one of the items pictured above :)

Total internal case length is around 200mm. Short :P
 
A picture speaks a thousand words, so i'll show you what i mean.. hopefully by this Wednesday :)

Sadly, no room on the left... that was the stock area for a single slot gfx card... has about 26mm clearance. My initial idea was to find an aftermarket cooler slim enough to fit in there.. i did manage to find one but the cooling pipes at the top meant i couldn't fit it in! It was pretty frustrating actually :P

As for the phantom (lovely card btw :))... i can probably just about fit that but it would require more modding.. not sure if it's worth the effort. I'm currently eyeing up the Gainward Golden Sample GTX560 ti. The dimensions ticks all the boxes :) so will probably go for that instead.

Yes, i can easily fit a dual slot gfx card in the stock HDD area :) (thanks to Gainward/Palit redesigning the stock pcb to the gtx 560!)

Pico psu not an option. Currently there are no manufacturerers making anything above 200w. Plus it's rather expensive for what it is. Using a standard atx psu bolted to the underside of my desk is (for me) the best solution for my intended build :)

edit: yeh, no phantom :( If i don't got for the ODD then i can easily fit one but I need it (hate the idea of needing to buy an externally powered usb one... too much clutter)
 
That's an intersting idea :) ..and one that could work now that my cpu cooler is only 46mm in height now meaning there's a bit of room to play with.

Assuming there's enough room (which i doubt), the new positioning of the card now means i need a longer pci2 riser cable. I've looked and 15cm is about the longest i can find. I could buy another and add it on but that's more cable clutter to deal with. Also, securing the pcie riser will become a lot more involved as currently it's very straightforward.

The tray mod would involve more work too and if i wanted to upgrade with another gfx card, i'd probably have to fab another tray... not very appealing. i think the GS version will have to do :P

nope, i've seen other people's mods using even longer power cables! Mine won't be an issue.. might need an extender but that's about it. :)

I'd have the GPU fan pointing downwards, modify the front faceplate to fit a 120mm fan a la Silverstone Sugo for some cool air, and use a heatpipe based cooler for the CPU so you can leave plenty of air inside for the GPU.
IIRC the i5 is a 95W TDP chip, so something with a decent amount of surface area would be best (I was working with 35 W TDP and used laptop heatpipes, and a modified Shuttle cooler at one point)

As for the GPU, I mounted mine using rubber grommets from a Lian Li and it went some way to isolating the vibration from the fan which sounds bloody awful as it's an all aluminium case. Make sure you fit the case feet too, that makes a HELL of a lot of difference to sound!

Your suggestions are definitely worth considering but i'm going to go for the 'easiest' route which means no modding to the front face plate but can still fit a fan to blow air over the cpu, mobo and gfx card. Going to stick with the gpu fan facing upwards as i don't want it fighting for air with the cpu (cpu fan will be blowing downwards).

Using an aftermarket cooler is something i won't rule out but i think the stock cooler will be sufficient... will defo monitor temps and noise and then re-assess accordingly :) Am planning on using quite a bit of rubber just for that reason: reduce vibrations, protect back pcb to gfx card and provide support.

Yeh, not stuck on the case feet yet... am thinking of some different ones but probably use the stock ones in the end.. have some time to decide :)

You think so? I actually don't mind both but the GS seems to offer better cooling?

I think the Palit cards use orange fan blades :P They look really bad IMO :P

I was being lazy and just used ms paint and 'drew' the words on there :P
 
it's really the same as the one i posted but if you can imagine the piece of aluminium on the left (one coming from the top of the case)... is just on the right.. that's it! :P
