Project: Danger

Well it arrived when they said it would today, not too happy about being woke up at 6.50a.m. but hey ho.

Now i knew from reading reviews and other peoples experiences that these are a pain in the back side to bleed whatnot but that was not going to put me off. It seemed with revision 1 and 2 that they included a bleed pipe to help with the problem. I was expecting a revision 2 to land but apparently they have just released revision 3 which has the bleed pipes inside, only problem is i think they stick out like a sore thumb i was not happy at all.
So if your thinking of getting one or have your pre-orders in then chances are it'll be the rev 3 you get if your using a coloured coolant fair do's it may not be as noticeable but why for heavens sake make the newly added bits chrome and shiny chrome too no matter onwards and upwards.

Have had my "mock up" running for 2 weeks now and allthough it looks like a disaster zone as far as tubing is concerned its given me some invaluable help and ideas considering its my first watercooled build.
The whole lot is set to be transplanted into a 700d over the weekend just a few small decisions to make that i would like your input on.
Currently the triple push/pull is inside the case and cooling cpu and mobo the rx480 is external and cooling 1 gpu at the moment with 2 sat here ready to go wc.
Am in 2 minds wether to keep the quad external and fixed with the koolance bracket or mod the 700d to have the quad in the case and the triple external, what do you think chaps would the quad look "too much" mounted externally i cannot decide :confused:

Well that was 3 days offline i won't forget in a hurry hells bells i am patient but even i allmost snapped :D

Morning Paul :)

When the case is ready is ready and i grab some new cards will probably do the quad top and 2 dual in the lower psu bay, not entirely sure of the outside rad. It looks ok but not 100% stuck on it the fan noise is pretty good considering and that will improve once i get around to installing the acquero and can moderate the speeds properly :)

Hi Mr Cleeecooo sah, yeah it is kind of "beastly" looking not sure if it will stay for the final build but its definately different :)

Thanks for the kind words Mr w3bbo sah, its still a work in progress and am thoroughly enjoying it (well apart from the last 3 days) :)

Cheers Stinger53 thanks for the comment and for taking the time to look :)

Mr May sah, blimey you've but a lot of time and effort into thinking this one out, have only just gotten back online so will have a good look and think over the suggestions, am liking the idea of moving the psu good thinking :D

So why 3 days :confused::mad:

I started cutting up the 700d to fit the sr2 motherboard tray friday morning, what with one thing and another i realised my trusty dremmel was not upto the task. Cue a visit to wilkinson and an £18 angle grinder probably my best purchase of late cuts really well and importantly a lot quicker than a dremmel.
Was going to move the build into it but am going to wait until i have it finished and sprayed, useing the 800d at present to test and play around with layout untill i am 100% satisfied then i will move the gubbins over.

By far the biggest time consumer was filling and bleeding this revision 1.3 koolance res, the rev 1.3 supposedly helps improve the filling and bleeding process .... good grief what the heck was it like before??
It started out well and bearing in mind this is my first build the pump started making a real "grinding" noise. I panicked and jumped online to order a new one not realising as a friend explained "you idiot its just trapped air" thanks Mick you saved me a lot of time trouble and money :D.
So once that was out of the way (best part of a full day to bleed!!) i thought about the triple rad on top and got to thinking it was a bit of overkill for the cpu and mobo cooling, so replaced it with single depth triple pull only which has not made ant difference to temps cpu 100% load 3.8 oc 49 degrees and the wc 480 845 core and 34 degrees ... a good day.

So thats what i have been upto, still a work in progress and occasionally frustrating but still hugely enjoyable and the satisfaction of getting it right is a win win :)

The case mod still needs "finishing off" then spraying but am well pleased with getting the sr2 mobo tray inso easily:rolleyes:;)

Looking good mate :D but one worry with the sr2 mobo mount it is right up to the top of your case with the I/O plate will there be any room for the top mounted rad and fans with the mobo in ?

Morning N :)

Its very close certainly a double depth rad is out so its either a slim danger den or a top mounted koolance :)

Apologies for the lack of updates peeps but as its my first wc build i was never intending to rush it :)

Am still waiting on the fingers to recover from the angle grinding session before i get cracking.

On the plus side after going through every colour and effect imaginable have finally decided on a colour/effect scheme for the case.

While this pic may not do the effect justice by the time i use a spray on satin finish varnish it should look fine, coupled with a "splash" of red on the psu and braiding am looking forward to the finished product :)

If funds permit i may alter the build to an sr-2 as i picked up 2 xeon L5640 at a reasonable price on members market, they work fine in the rampage 3 extreme but you know how it is 24 threads is better than 12 if your crunching :D

Thought i would get cracking on the case :)

The stage is set .... this is where the joy of being single pays dividends no "what do you think your doing to my kitchen" and eyes over your shoulder :)

Start with something easy like the case front of the 800D, with only a very slight sanding its good to go.

First coat done thanks to £1 a can from your local poundland :)

On with the stone effect stuff a tad more at £7 per can well you can't win 'em all :)

Am pleased with it so far and by the time its done it should take on a life of its own with the red thats going into it :)

Minor update just to keep you interested hopefully :)

Motherboard tray is done and worked out as planned have put a few pcie blanks in to give you an idea of the overall colour scheme.

Once i have saved enough for an sr-2 it will replace the r3. Had to order some bits today which should be here tommorrow and have everything up and running by tommorrow evening.

Once i do i will be takeing out the hex screws one by one to do them in red to match.

The xspc rx 480 that was "hanging" off the back is history i just couldn't get used to it looked like a bad case of piles so am going to try and get 2 x 240 in the psu bay this should be fun :)

Looking good Mr T ! cant wait to see the finish item and you've got me thinking about going 2011 now lol :o

Dont be blaming me for your 2011 ideas :p

Everything is ready to go case is finished inside n out, a few hardware upgrades i kept quiet aboot .... just a darn shame i cant finish it that angle grinder am sure theres some shards stuck in me fingers a right mess now you know why i called it project danger :rolleyes::(

Thanks for the comments chaps much appreciated :)

Well its 90 percent done

Friday i decided i was not happy with the loop and out came the tea towels tube cutters and the pan, i will get around to installing the koolance quick release gadgets at some point but i just went in hard n fast this time :)

Saturday morning and it was all dissmantled, parts covering the kitchen and bedroom ... this was not a good example of an orderly build but what the heck it was my first wc build so i plodded on.
Made mental note never to spray fan grills a red colour on too small a piece of paper as it leaves a right nasty stain behind.

By saturday evening it was shaping up nicely with the spray i had done earlier. Most of the parts were in that i wanted just need to decide how to go with the dual bay res red or the granite effect argggh and the top display screen.
Then i realised i was putting all the gubbins in an 800d and had sprayed the 700d front cover never mind think it looks better this way.

Didn't realise how much i wanted the sr-2 mobo until i was putting this together but funds dont permit as yet so a lot of the "rough edges" like the rear of the case am waiting on some modders mesh and am not going to permanently fasten the tray down untill i have the sr-2.
Likewise with the psu and the finer cosmetic touches its going to wait until i can get the new mobo but on the whole am fairly pleased with how its gone so far.

Sunday the good stuff went in 4 gtx 470's decided to replace the black backplates with chrome effect for no other reason than i had some laying around along with the r3 and a xeon l5640 hex core 12 threaded beastie that should dish out the seti work units in no time :)

The top was the part i thought hardest about believe it or not fans/shrouds whatnot but thought a radguard and a tin of the old insignia red sets it off just right .... pity about spraying over the bitspower logo but heyho

In good old fashioned mfi unit building tradition i had a ton of stuff left over, so when funds permit theres this little lot that could be put to good use.

The biggest goof was going in blind with the angle grinder i managed to shear the shelf corner off but thats on the spare case so will just have to get a new one in time.

Putting it all together was not so bad but had the headache of all time with windows and 4 gpu's that took another 24 hours to sort out. Have the red braided cables to install waiting on the modders mesh and got myself a spare 800d side panel that am going to have a "play about" with to show the gubbins to full effect.

It was a lot harder than i thought it would be but yup am satisfied with it and look forward to putting an sr-2 in there, sure there are things i could have done better but i tried my best at the time dont be shy about any criticism you might have but bare in mind it was my first so go easy :o:D

Cheers Nige :)

Suprisingly good everything is at stock for the minute cpu averages 33 on 65% load and all 4 gpu's on 27 idle

The real acid test comes tonight when i start crunching again and crank up the overclocks .... and oc the xeon ;)

Starting to oc slowly and pleased with the cpu so far got a feeling the gpu temps are going to be quite high once i work them upto 750 or so on the core but its getting there and well chuffed

any updates ttb? also, is this case all metal? as I'm considering getting it when I finish my upgrades and powdercoating it white and mybe with some orange :D

Evening KiiYzOo :)

There will be some updates in 3 weeks, think i have finally got the funds for an sr-2 ... time to put those 2 xeons to work methinks :)

Its just a bog standard 800d with an sr-2 motherboard tray which i thought was a good idea given the amount of mobo changes i go through, its metal yes with "stone" effect paint works really well though.
Once you have everything in place rather than spend money on powder coating why not spray it, providing you take your time and plenty of masking tape it should work out well at a much lower cost .... £7.50 and a roll of tape to do mine then there was the red if you want to highlight the effect :)

Cheers for that Phill :)

Borsch go ahead and do it, this was my first wc build so if i can do it anyone can. All you need to remember is check, double check and check again you will be glad you did :)
