Grab a cup of tea, you're gonna need it.
(quite a few folks on OcUK have helped out towards this so I wanted to do a little thread to show you guys where it's all going, this thread is in no way, shape or form asking for anything)
Meet Dave. He's the gentleman on the left of this photo (this photo is 6 years old, can't find a newer one right now):
He's been a member of our little gaming community for longer than most and is one hell of a decent person. Dave's wife lost her terrible battle with cancer on the 9th of January. Dave is retired. This means that Dave now has a huge gaping hole in his life which we can potentially help to fill.
Dave doesn't own a gaming PC, and we all know how awesomely amazeballs your life is with a gaming PC. Women want you, men want to be you, that kind of thing.
Enter everyone.
I started raising funds and begging. We raised a little bit between us all and managed to snag a brand new 1060 6gb in the box, so we were off to a good start. As this little project went on, the creative juices started flowing more and more, with more suggestions and ideas from those involved, and it's developed in to what you're seeing here today.
The initial idea was to simply build Dave a PC and hand it to him. I wanted this to be more than simply a giveaway however, so I floated the idea of building the PC with Dave, so he learns a bit, has some fun and hopefully kick starts a nice hobby for him. Problem 1: How are we going to hand all this stuff over to Dave?
What's the most controversial word in the gaming industry at the moment? LOOT BOXES!
Done, loot box it is.
Quick scout around at work, and VOILA!
LOOT BOX!
I happen to know someone who loves doing art stuff, and is quite good at it. Quick to-and-fro on the Facebook Messenger, and he agrees to paint our logo on it provided we give him the cans of paint. Done. The loot crate will be with me tomorrow, I'll probably drop it off over the weekend and he can paint it.
We have also been given a 32" 1440p Acer monitor by a very generous member on here, together with some fans and other bits and bobs from someone else, we've also bought 16gb of 3000mhz DDR4 with loads of RGBness for his RGB fix (Dave loves that kind of thing). Today we ordered a 2600x with an Asus B450-F motherboard.
Thanks again to the generosity of some, we have been given an MSI summer promo pack free of charge, along with some other goodies which will become clear in the final reveal. I've no idea exactly what's in the promo pack but I imagine it looks something like this:
Problem 2: This crate is huge. Like really, really huge. No chance all this kit is going to fill it up. AHA! It's a loot crate right? I have a few bits and bobs lying around the house, but that's still not enough. Enter my wife (hurrrrr) who works at a famous high street department store and has connections to get discount. Good discount. A few phone calls and a bit of begging later, this is what we have:
Jam, marmalade, Maker's Mark, wine gums, toffees, biscuits, tea, truffles, and chocolate. Off to a flying start then.
And of course the only bit of hardware we have at the moment:
On top of this I have a few less glamorous items to add to the crate, a 4-gang extension lead, some Cat5e cables, a pair of old homeplugs, a few USB drives, a screwdriver set, some cable ties and a torch.
We still have to buy:
SSD
HDD
PSU
Case
Keyboard
I'll keep this thread updated with progress, we're hoping to drive up to his house soon and do the reveal and build (his sons are involved too, we're not going to just turn up like that).
Stay tuned, and thanks again to all those who helped out![Smile :) :)](/styles/default/xenforo/vbSmilies/Normal/smile.gif)
