Project: Heart Of Obsidian

PROGRESS UPDATE 4
Hello again, I have been working hard on my video and editing skills recently in order to try and submit a great video for the NVidia Competition so I have not had time to write up another update. I have actually recorded video for three separate modding related videos as practice; took quite some time! I have taken a metric tonne of photos though so here goes…
(think the photos were a little large last time, I have made them smaller, hopefully better.)

GPU Waterblock
So here we go, adding the waterblock. There is something I love about fitting a GPU waterblock. Cant put my finger on it, but its very satisfying. I have not fitted heatsinks for the RAM for 2 reasons. Firstly I asked OCUK and they said that they don’t for their Tech Labs cards so I don’t think ill need them. Secondly, I will have quite a bit of air flow so that should be plenty to cool them. There is no heatsink on the stock cooler either FYI.

The beautiful GALAX Black edition and Thermosphere block. Really nice combo.

Plenty of goop

But she cleans up well!

Very well!

And it fits like a glove! What a result. An attractive match im sure you’ll agree.

The Glass!!!
I finally got the glass! As planned I had to pick it up, but glass is such great value if you do that. Cost me £8 for this piece, and this is 4mm toughened glass. Bargain!

This part of the project is one of my favourite sections. It has turned out exactly as designed without a hiccup. It was slightly difficult to assemble because the glass does not slide on the soft rubber tape (which was intentional). Works a treat, take a look for yourself.

Dimensions all set, ready to go

Used a dremel to remove the tabs from the plastic, and drilled holes (using a drill…), then painted over the clean metal with some matt black paint.

Let me introduce you to the glass! 445 x 445mm toughened glass with edges that don’t cut your hands!

You can see here that the edges have been removed to stop it being sharp! Perfect.

My little 3D printed clamps fit wonderfully.

4 on each side

Add single sided foam tape with some nuts, washers and screws…

And Bobs your mothers brother! Ta Da!! Didn’t count quite the right number of screws so had to order more, but the final result has all 16 fittings.

Blanking Plates
So the blanking plates were painted black using some Plastikote. Not the best paint in the world but it seems to work perfectly for my needs here. Gave me an excellent, smooth matt black finish.

This is the plate in the bottom of the case

Look lush with the PSU in there

And then there is also one in the top

Getting some proper kit installed
The radiators were always going to be difficult. To get the best out of low rpm, and low noise, I needed a foam gasket. This is what forced the rad tapping into m4, and thus the change of screws. They have turned out great and fit really well, very pleased.

I used these monsoon fittings as plugs for the Rads and Thermosphere block. I knew that I would need them before I purchased, but alphacool include these in the box so it was quite a bit extra that had to be forked out.

With the foam gasket fitted, everything is look great.

Rad into the top…

Front with no rad

And with rad. BISH BASH BOSH. NEXT.

Toooobes
The tubes needed to go in next, that meant motherboard, gpu, the lot.

In she goes!

Whack on the modded Raystorm block

Smash in the motherboard

Throw in some fittings

Shove some tubes in, and a beautiful glass reservoir

A smattering of kitchen towel

And that’s all for now! I will be back soon with some nice glam shot of the final build I hope.

Have a nice day :)
