Project Log

I'm running a 800 Watt corsair PGU, which I've had for five years now.

I've concerns about power supply to my PC, and if there is damage being caused.

What might be the simplest tool / method to check power consumption?

After I plugged in a mech keypad a few weeks back it seemed to start to go faulty after a few weeks of being fine, and then shut off completely. Also when I did plug iot in via USB after that it would immediately shut of my PC completely cold, which of course was very worrying. It was doing this to another PC, so from then on there was definately a fault with the keypad

I now have an expensive new keyboard and don't want to run into the same issues.

After putting the PC insto 'sleep' for a couple of hours today, the keyboard was not detected when I woke it up and from then on it wouldn't connect to the keyboard or the mouse, until I did a full restart. The keyboard keys were lighting up tho.

I've removed a lamp from the electricty extender socket (but I did this morning before above issues) - which now has 3 plugs - 2 powering monitors (one a 1080p, and the other one a lower res).

Is ther any way cabling from the PSU could be an issues?

The power extender to my PC comes from a double wall socket, and I keep the other one free.

Any input appreciated.

Also to document is I'm getting an error message on shutdown again today, which I thought was related to an issue Id resolved by reinserting the ram into the correct sockets. It's something like 'memory could not be written' and then a bunch of random numebrs digits - it only comes up for a couple of seconds before shut down. I've seen it once today, and then one other time post re inserting the 2 x 4 GB DDR5 ram

Possibly motherboard is failing.

Tricky situation given that it connects the rest of it up. Though if it is the mobo, at least that can't cause power surges.

The PC is now connected to the house power supply differently, but I doubt it's improved much.

I very much suspect the mobo has damage / wear, given the persistent error message and USB connectivity issues.

bleep bloop bloop.

PC budget is now modified because I only have time to hobby with this 'project', unfortunately.

Got a new sound card though which is pretty sweet.

Current issues;
Keyboard and mouse will not switch on if PC is 'woken' from sleep. An annoying hitch, but the main concern is what else this might relate to.

Have not seen any more of this 'memory error' message on shutdown recently, I will though.

PC re-posted a couple of time recently which it had stopped doing.

Yesterday the screen graphics scrambling occurred again, while gaming with dual monitors. No overclocking in place. 'Display settings' is my friend.

There's only one PCI slot the GPU seems to be stable from - I had to try moving it to give more space between it and the sound card.

So the sound card is staying out of this system for now, which sucks, but it's a new card and I don't want to ruin it.

Hopefully, at the weekend I'll make some time for diagrams that illustrate where the components are, particularly the fans.

The PC in it's current set up is unstable. Was getting the BSOD at the weekend over and over, and I've been unable to figure out why.

For ages, I've wanted to either revamp or get a new set up, and I've had a rethink of strategy given the current issues and what I need from it.

What's needed; something that lets me word process and record keep daily. So am looking to get a solution for that at as low cost as possible.

I'm a bit uneasy because I've lost two USB with valuable data on them and a keyboard as well. That was after being plugged into the front and back USB ports. I'm assuming this was caused by a faulty motherboard, but am concerned too that it may have been caused by the PSU. Or the cabling that is apart of the case (this is probably the least likely cause).

Working under the above assumption, then I'll only need to replace the motherboard. Most likely it's going to be a used H61 board which will take the old CPU. It doesn't look like my PPU will fit, but I'm accepting to leave gaming alone for the time being. Plus, I can sell it.

Don't want to make any expensive mistakes!

Can anyone advise;

How can I test my PSU?

Would be really awesome if I can acquire a monitor that can be drilled / attached into my study room wall.

Am very keen to begin taking things apart / back together on this at the weekend. I'll post some pictures of the space that I'm using for this.

Aborting this plan for the time being. It's too much faffing about, and I don't have the confidence that I'll be making the best decisions. I'm just going to tidy up what I've got and make do.

When there's time I'd really like to test the PSU and motherboard though. And if possible get more than two USB ports. Going to look into going back to a previous version of windows.
