Hey guys,

Thought I'd start a mini build log for my LAN gaming / 2nd PC. Aim was to use as much spare junk as I had lying around the house combined with some cheap but well-performing parts. So here's what I had to start:

  • OCZ Modstream 450W PSU
  • XFX GeForce 8800GTS 320MB
  • Hitachi 250GB SATA Drive
  • OCZ Equalizer Mouse
  • Logitech Keyboard
  • Windows XP x64 Edition
And here's what I've ordered to go with it:
  • Abit I-N73HD Motherboard
  • Intel Pentium 2.5GHz E5200 (45nm Wolfdale with 2MB cache)
  • 2 x 1GB OCZ PC2-8500 SLI-Ready RAM
  • Silverstone Sugo SG02
  • Silverstone SST-NT06 Lite Heatsink
  • Optiarc DVD Writer
  • 3 x 80mm Sharkoon "Golf ball" fans
  • 1 x 92mm Sharkoon "Golf ball" fan
The total for all of that comes to roughly £265, so not too bad at all. All of the kit should arrive tomorrow, so I'll make another post detailing my build hopefully :)

Well that motherboard uses the nForce 630i chipset which only supports single channel RAM, so to keep that CPU busy you need at least DDR2-800. But I wanted some overclocking headroom, so I went for the OCZ PC8500 which was only £5 more expensive.

It was cheap! About £40 :D

About half of what a P43/P45 mobo was going for, but equally featured on paper at least.

I am now going to pull the 8800GTS from my main PC and put it in the LAN box now (as it will perform better with the new kit!)

Ok here it goes, my build log!

Chip, motherboard and cooler - note how I've mounted a 92mm fan under the heatsink to help blow air up and out through the PSU. Also I have swapped the NT06 Lite cooler I initially wanted to use for an NT06 Evolution which feels a lot tackier, but unfortunately the entire NT06 shipment has faulty heatpipes.

Had to use a nail cutter to trim some solder stubs on the backside of the motherboard so that the backplate for cooler could fit nice and tight...

All done :) probably won't post any benchies and stuff here unless there are any you guys specifically want to request :p but if I dabble in any overclocking I will be sure to post back ;)

Hey,

Initially I found it quite noisy (I'm a bit of a silent PC freak). I discovered the loudest components were the hard drive and the 80mm fans. So I mounted HDD with a rubber vibe-damping kit in a 5.25" bay, and used the 5V mod to make the fans run at around 800rpm. Temps are a bit higher on the chipset doing this, but it's thankfully a lot more aurally tolerable! On hindsight I should have got Sharkoon 1000rpm fans, but I guess now I have the option to switch them over to 12V in the summer!

Looks great. Good job on the fan underneath the NT06. I was planning on doing that when I was thinking about a Sugo but couldn't find any evidence that it'd fit.

It was a pretty tight fit to be honest... made worse because I wanted to botch a chrome fan grill over the bottom (had to bend the "arms" with pliers so they stuck out less). I'm not sure what effect it actually has on temperatures, because I stupidly forgot to take some readings without it :( but I assume it is helping the PSU fan out at least a little bit...

Looks great, but why not the SG02-F? :)

The -F is all steel construction and so a lot heavier... this Ally version was only about a tenner more, so I thought why not :D

Few quick updates: since I mounted the hard drive in a 5.25" bay, I've removed the 3.5" caddy which has created a lot more space for the cabling. I also got some right-angled SATA connectors which makes the drive area a bit tidier. Finally, I am in the process of overclocking this little beast :D having a lot of trouble with the RAM, but it is currently running Orthos with these settings:

CPU 12.5 x 266 (3.33GHz) 1.3V, VTT 1.2V
RAM unlinked at 933MHz, 5-4-4-12-22-2T, 2.1V
VMCH 1.40V

Will report back in 8 hours time!

Cheers,

Shaffaaf:

Get the NT06 V2, and you should hit 3.5GHz with ease on that DFI board. I got 3.33 with only a tiny voltage increase, so I imagine the newer chips are even better. As tute said, 120mm is doable, but you need to make sure it clears components on your board (that's the main issue which forced me to use a 92mm - anything bigger hit the mosfet heatsink laterally).

Note though you CANNOT use the NT06 with the crossflow fan - they're mutually exclusive since they occupy the same space. There's a note about it on the SS website if you need more info. You could however mount the crossflow fan on the outside of the case and use it as an intake, but I'm not sure how effective that would be.

Hope that helps,

Suman
