Hi all,

SWMBO has allowed me to look at a projector for the playroom, so I am now on the lookout.

The room is 2.97, (9'9") x 2.92m (9'7") and I am looking along the lines of HD141x or Benq W1070.

If I was to go with the Benq and my room dimensions, I would only be able to have 70" instead of the 80" quoted by Optoma throw calculator. I would be looking for an 80" drop down screen (TV is Wall Mounted in there)

Just really looking for thoughts / suggestions on screen size / recommendations / etc..

Is the HD141x a good starer projector? It will primarily be used for gaming and sports watching.

What sort of screen should I be looking for?

Budget wise £500 for the PJ and upto £200 for the screen I would say to get me started.

Thanks

I have a Viewsonic 1080p/3d projector and its fantastic but I don't have a screen as my wall is the right colour etc for a good picture.

However, my friend recently bought a projector and had worked out before he bought it it would throw around 85-90" based on his room size etc but when he set it up in its final location, it was throwing 120-125" with perfect quality.

So my advise for the screen - would be to buy the projector first, see what the max size is you can get thrown on the wall, or the max size you like for the wall, then but the screen to match.

Thoroughly agree - it can be difficult to work out real world throw sizes without seeing it when you have to take into account where you can mount the projector - the length of the projector itself and where you can mount a screen.

I'd also recommend viewing said projectors before buying - both are DLP and if you or the family are annoyed by the 'rainbow effect' it won't make watching movies on a big screen much fun.

I have the HD141x.
Cant recommend it enough, crisp picture quality.
I don't personally see the rainbow effect, but my mom when she came to see it, said she could see it. Best to try to see in person.

I have a Benq W1070, no rainbow, 900 hours on the bulb so far. I got a 77" Sapphire screen from Richer Sounds with a Yamaha amp and 5.1 speakers & subwoofer to finish it off.

Thanks all, my friends have the W1070 and I haven't seen any rainbow effect at all when viewing theirs, so may have a search and see where I can pick one up.

Once I have one, I will test screen size before committing to one.

Richer Sounds may be worth a look.

HD141x rainbow drove me mental, had to send back and get an Epson TW5210. You lose a little bit of black level compared to DLP, really is not that noticeable to me but the lack of rainbow effect is pure bliss.

I'm pretty sure the HD141X is the most likely to cause the rainbow effect due to its slow colour wheel. I own a HD141X, and can see the rainbow effect a fair amount. Although it's dropped significantly the longer I've owned it.

For gaming the rainbow effect is pretty minimal, but in hindsight I'd have gone with the Epson.

But it's still the best 430 quid I've spent as far as viewing stuff goes.

I was only bothered by the rainbow effect once I'd read about it, however I soon got over it and only notice it if I look side to side really quickly.
