Projector vs large TV - Bang for buck

Depends on the layout of the room and where is good to place the projector for an unobstructed throw, minimise noise disturbance from it, etc. - personally I'd probably aim for around 4m or so and whatever zoom works with that.

Its a rectangle room with led lighting so nothing in the way. Back wall to front wall 5 meters. So il be sitting about 4.5 meters from the screen (allowing 1/2m for the sofa width). Does that help?

Epson EH-TW6700 projector with a Sapphire 100'' fixed screen on the wall directly in front.

I will be using for the cinema experience during the nights with curtains done. But its a replacement for tv so will also be using for crap day time tv. There is a large window either side of the projector screen so during the day there will be quite a lot of natural light coming though. Maybe not sun as that room gets very little direct sun but still plenty of day time light.

As day time is a factor you'll get the best all around balance going closer (~3.5-4m). As its a decent projector and not some cheap jobbie you really shouldn't get a huge difference in image quality in terms of zoom, etc. over a few feet or so difference in position but it can make some odds for day time viewing.

So go closer to what:

4m = 1.19x zoom, max room light 5fc
3.5m = 1.35x zoom, max room light STILL says 5fc
3m = 1.58x zoom, max room light jumps up to 6fc just about!

Seem I have to go at least a meter closer to get the max fc up from 5 to 6. Not sure how much difference that will make in real life?! Doesn't seem like much of a jump in fc.

i would class my projector as a mid price one (£3500 ish) and it looks horrible in day light viewing

Yes, but often the cheaper projectors are referred to as "light cannons", and are better suited for daytime viewing than more expensive projectors that are generally set up in more dedicated spaces really. Certainly my old Optoma had no issues with daytime viewing really. I just think it was too big for general, day to day viewing. Which is why I don't really think it's wise to replace a TV with a projector.

Even my Sony is pretty good through the day, although I do have a reasonable amount of light control where it is set up, so I can basically turn the room into a batcave if required. I would also class that as mid-range, although it is certainly cheaper than your £3500 one, lol.

Rather than start a new thread - has anyone ever seen like a desktop chassis designed for mounting a projector designed for being ceiling mounted? I'm having to relocate my setup and can't ceiling mount it in the new setup but there is a tall cabinet in just the right place for sticking it but it needs to be upside down to get the projection right :s probably gonna have to DIY it.

Something like this?

Obviously you could either wall mount it, or turn it upside down and mount from the top of the box?

What I'm gonna have to do is something like the last bit - turn the projector upside down and mount it from the top of the box - was wondering if anyone did a desktop chassis type thing already - I guess I'm gonna have to DIY.
