I have slopping ceilings and measuring what will fit seems like i can only get an 82" screen

how small a screen becomes a point where you say, its just not worth having a projector vs a TV ?

Yes and no.

You'll get an image, but colour correct to a beige wall? Hmmm unlikely in my opinion, depends on how beige it is I guess. If you're going to do it, get a screen.

Oh and for the record I had a 50" plasma and 92" projector setup (so only 10" different to you) and it was mind boggling. The difference is ENORMOUS.

Now get ordering :D

Well I still have a 42'' plasma so the jump would be the same

If I project on to the wall I would get a slightly larger image so might try that first

I read there is some paint you can use, if anyone has any info on that would be appreciated

I'd say anything under about 65" you start to lose the impact of it pretty fast probably 72" and up better - mine have been ~84-100" depending on setup which feels like a good size in your average home cinema setting.

In a dark room with the projector on a good brightness level projected onto a cream wall will be ok but you can do much better and won't be amazing in lighter conditions.

If your able to paint the desired wall a nice matte grey (as mentioned, google!) then that will help a lot with reflective light etc

It doesn't matter what screen size you have, 82" is worth it of course but you will always want bigger :D

Depends on how far your sitting from the screen, if you're sitting 3 meters away then it'll be a pretty good size, if you're 5 meters away it is going to seem on the smaller side.

it will be a dark room when watching and im happy to repaint the wall, just wanted actual peoples experiences of it rather than just random google

will be about 9ft back and it sounds like 82" with a screen or touch bigger without will be perfect.

My personal view is that a good projector is probably well over £1k. At that, you could buy an 55" LG OLED. I'd put money on the OLED for outright picture quality in anything but a fully optimised room, and probably black levels even in a blacked out room.
I'd see the primary advantage being in size, so for me, I think I'd rather have an OLED if under say 90" in size.
Right now, I'm running with an equivalent screen size of around 120" from my projector, not something even close to being available as an OLED.

The TI (DarkChip, etc.) based 1080p projectors like Optoma and BenQ can be had comfortably under £1K and pretty decent. The OLED might have the edge in some aspects of picture quality but there is nothing like the experience of a wall sized display with a big budget movie.

My Optoma HD30 was £450-£500 when I purchased it. Produces a fantastic picture.

Don't forget, the screen pays a big part in the delivery of the final image :) No point spending all the molah on an expensive projector and then using a white sheet :D

I was looking at the hw40es projector for around £1800 vs an OLED 55"

this was on my list as well, richer sounds were quite happy with me buying the optoma hd50 I have and returning it for the sony if I didn't like it. Personally i'm really happy with what the hd50 delivers and I lose less if I update to a 4k one in a few years when cost is less prohibitive and content more readily available.

yet to get a screen but image from last night

Don't think you need to spent that much on a projector to get a good image. Only spent £350 on my Epson TW5210 and gives a great pic with zero RBE.

Quick snap of steam big pic, the 3D is amazing as well. Monitor on left is 24" for size reference and it's projecting onto a white wall, really need to paint it or something.

But... but... but...

J/K have it on a proper screen now - it does make a ton of difference.
