I'm in the middle of planing projects and budgets for 2009. 2006-2008 were big project years for our business in which I :

1) Replaced the telephony system with Asterisk VoIP
2) Replaced the network core and edge with Gigabit based on HP 2900 switches
3) Replaced front firewall with Cisco ASA 5500
4) Upgraded half the client PC population
5) Virtualised the majority of the server infrastructure (due to happen in August 2008)
6) Brought VPN and Exchange Activesync in house.
7) Implemented a new disaster recovery solution based on disk to disk to tape and UltraBac.
8) Brought the business system software (MFG/PRO) in house.

Now for 2009 I want to replace the rest of the PC client population and begin to investigate newer versions of Exchange, Windows Server and Office. Other than that I'm really struggling to think of what else really needs to be brought up to date!

So thats why I'm posting. What stuff are you considering for IT projects for 2009? Give me some ideas! :)

Difficult one, we've put most of the big projects to bed this past year. Still to do...

Finish the MPLS core upgrades (last few sites need iBGP and full internet routing table)

Take our virtualisation trial into production

Upgrade Exchange backend storage (2007 is also on the table for discussion)

One massive upgrade to our backup systems coming up, new SANs, servers, tape libraries and all the rest.

I also need to work on Datacenter infrastructure a bit, the amount of blades and SANs we're putting in is causing all manner of power consumption problems

Migrating 4K users from E2K3 to E2K7 (built infrastructure last year)
Decomming old domains
Sharepoint
Dedicated VMware development network
Some Citrix projects
Dragging finance kicking and screaming into our filer platform (Netapp)
Asterix is being rolled out when our current Avaya systems become EOL

the easiest way to got from E2k3 to E2k7 is build new servers and just move the mailboxes :P

especially if you use any form of clustering in E2k3

my project for 2009 is to replicate our Blade and SAN in our secondary office and get block level replication working via some stupidly expensive cisco IP devices.

By that i mean i will be watching another company doing it :P

Very busy time at the moment for a 120 user company..

  • Replace telephone system with a nice shiny new Intertel system
  • Huge project to replace our current ERP system
  • Replace all servers with Virtualised servers that are replicated and load balenced.
  • Sort out a proper support contract
doesn't sound like a lot, but that will keep me busy for 2 years

Thats the only way, Exchange 2007 has no upgrade paths and is 64Bit only.
