Im having an issue with the fan clips on a prolimatech super mega cooler. The issue being, i switched out a pair of akasa vipers for two alpenfohn wing boost fans on the cooler. Theese fans use a different type of frame than a conventional fan, on start theres a loud clicking, as i think the blades are hitting the wire clips, fine at idle in windows, but once the fans speed up it starts again. The clips also arent able to get a grip on the frame, unlike the vipers. Anyone suggest a better fan mounting method.

Comparison of fan frames.

The flat section of the viper frame allows the clips to grab on, whereas on the alpenfohn, the inner frame is entirely circular.

Went back to the vipers, stuck the alpenfohns in my other rig.

No issues with the TRUE fan clips. Got some blue braided pcie cables coming soon for the gpu's to keep the blue theme going.

I had a Super Mega coupled with 2 Vipers & never did work out exactly which way round the clips were supposed to go.

Have you tried reversing them?

The clips can only go one way mate, they work fine on the vipers, takes no time to fit both fans. Unfortunately the alpenfohn fans are a different shape. Though they fit my TRUE fine as they use the fan screw holes to grab onto.

Vipers installed on supermega.

Yeah the Alpenfohn blades are slightly higher than normal although not all are like that so I suspect it might be a defect. I had a similar issue with one of my Alpenfohn fans.

Yep, it wasjust the front fan Helios, shame as they are pretty good fans, equally as good at cooling as the vipers, but a lot quieter. Idle temps were a bit higher with them, (40v vs 35 with the vipers), but load was pretty much the same. Wanted black and blue fans to match the gpu's etc, but theyll do in the other machine now.

Have you thought about 140mm fans? I managed to install a couple of Thermalright TY-140s on my Super Mega when I had it. Requires you to extend the wire clips a tiny bit but definitely works.

Ive tried 1500 rpm silverstone air penetrators and 1400 rpm yate loon 140mm fans Helios, cooling wasnt as good with the yates. The air penetrators were amazing, but sadly not pwm. Hence i use them as front intakes on a zalman fan controller. The focused airflow really helps with gpu cooling in a large case such as mine. The Lian Li A70F has quite a distance between the front fans and the gpu's.

The thermalrights would be great, they are definitely better than the akasas and alpenfohns if you get a chance to try them plus they have pwm functionality.

Sounds good mate, and do they work ok with prolimatech fan clips? The vipers are great at idle, but even in games theyre noisy, and the cpu is only hitting 64c in games. 77c in prime/ibt/linx. Ive actually thought about getting a silver arrow, now that im on low profile ram, (12gb of khx, as opposed to 6gb of ocz reaper). I looked at watercooling, but the cost is very prohibitive, even for a cpu loop. Add gpu's into that, it would cost more than the rigs worth. And ill probably upgrade the gpu's before the rest of the system.
