Proper Pubs and lack of them!

Im lucky enough to class this place as my local:

Ramblers Rest in Chislehurst.

Proper old fashioned pub down to the last detail, even the smell! No music, no TVs or anything! Proper beers on tap and a decent clientele usually although it seems to be becoming more and more popular every day.

We still have a large variety of proper pubs in the SE London region.

Plenty in Wolves still, if you know where you are going

Any chance of some names? Im getting board of drinking in town, although I did find a nice one last year it was a pub built into an old victorian house very small but a nice place

The Newhampton (just off Newhampton Road)

The Great Western (by the Royal Mail)

Both about a mile outside the centre :)

There are about 15 pubs in my town and 41 including the villages as well (within 2 miles of town). Nearly all of these are "proper pubs" :D with only one being a Wetherspoon.

When I go out to the pub, it's usually to one of the quieter pubs outside of town. There's some great places near to me, in the country. Every Tuesday we go to The **** in Luddesdown....tiny little country pub, usually got a fire going and the pub quiz every week. Then there's The Leather Bottle in Cobham, the Anchor and Hope in New Ash Green, The Wheatsheaf near Betsham (Which is tiny, not much more than a living room with a bar, but has a massive pub garden which is excellent int he summer) and the Green Man at Longfield Hill. The usual haunt for us is The Barn in Southfleet....bit more expensive but a more lively atmosphere with live music sometimes, so good for a Friday night.

Basically, there's lots of nice little pubs out in the countryside near me so I have lots of choice. My local town is a bit of a hole to be honest, there are some nice pubs but I only tend to visit to go to the local Wetherspoons to take advantage of the late night drinking. Usual drill is to go to a nice pub somewhere out int he country from about 8.30 - 11, then when they stop serving if we feel like staying out, go to town until 1am :)

All dying a death here in Peterorough.

The pubs did it to themselves really...

They all (mostly) jumped on the "theme" bandwagon and got rid of the lounge. This was the Posh "no crapwear & no smoking room".

Now smoking is banned they are now victims of the "Theme"

Plough & Harrow; Aldridge. Went there for lunch this afternoon.

10/10 for quality, presentation, food , service and value for money. Their head chef was trained by Gordon Ramsey.

Couple of young Aussies working behind the bar, which is always good to see (speaking as an Aussie myself).

:)

There are quite a few around here that are privately owned. They dont really have any special beers or anything, I would'nt really know anyway as I dont drink stuff like that.

There is a Weatherspoons around 15 mins away from my house which is in the town center. That place is usually a meeting place between friends, not really called a pub that I would spend more than 30 mins in really. Barred now anyway, so dont go in there anymore anyway :p

There are a few privately owned bars and pubs in the center that are nicely done and attract the 'right' sort of people.

The town center was very busy a couple of years ago, but since a few night clubs have closed down to a few reasons then people tend to go else where, so even the local town center privately owned pubs are getting no business. A friend who owns a pub has put his pub up for sale, saying theres no money really left in the area and wants to get away.

No Chain Pubs at all.

We Have:

The GreyHound
The Bell
The Redlion
The Plough
The Crown (More Of A Hotel, And is bout to go bust from what I hear)
The Cue & Cushion (Local Pool And Snooker Bar)
The Locomotive

Quite a few for such a small town. Some of them are posher pubs, such as the red lion which has recently been refurbished. Has a very posh Atmosphere during the day with all office and Suited people drinking in there, but once it gets to around half 6, turns into the best pub in town.

It is ashame I will agree.....Can't fight the corporations. I travel around quite a bit and often eat tea with my colleagues at a pub in an unfamiliar town. Often we have to go to Weatherspoons because there is no other choice. What I will say for Weatherspoons is at least it is cheap... I would much rather have pie, chips and pint in a proper pub however.

I've been going t'same pub fer twenty year,
It were half a crown then fer buy me beer,
But they closed it down fer redecorate,
They said we'll knock a wall down,
Change bar round,
Paint door brown,
It's going to look great.

When I walked into it I couldn't believe me eyes,
Every **** had a shirt and tie,
Mirrored walls and daft plastic trees,
It were a fun pub disco,
Wine bar bistro,
Gay club puff house,
Cocktail carvary.

So I walked to the bar fer to get me ale,
She said Tetly Bitter's not for sale,
They had fizzy lager with a German name,
I said you've got to be joking,
I started choking, me voice were croaking,
I turned round.

Then a penguin grabbed me fer to throw me out,
He said you've got to dress like a **** end to get in now,
But I've been served in here for twenty years,
Now it's a fun pub disco,
Wine bar bistro,
Gay club puff house,
Cocktail...
Oh what the **** **** **** have they done to me pub,
What the **** **** **** have they done to me pub,
What the **** **** **** have they done to me pub,
Now it's a fun pub disco,
Wine bar bistro,
Gay club puff house,
Cocktail carvery
