Jez- how far would £50K get you at a property auction? Is it possible to buy something decent outright at auction for that?

Cheers

That would make a nice deposit, but i cant think that it would buy anything outright, even up north..

That really is a glamorous title for something which is essentially just buying a few houses and letting/selling them on, its not that big a deal and its by no means a full time thing. Followed my dad into it really, been helping out for years with various houses.

Ah cool, it must be a nice feeling to sell it on (for a) profit and b) knowing you've made it more habitable for someone)

You can labour yourself than a lot more than that's been suggested so far - my family has been renovating for years and usually what happens is you'll buy a property that has been repossessed, or some old codger has popped his cloggs in, so it'll have old fittings (like the kitchen, fireplace, old bathrooms) which may need completely demolished - this you can do yourself with a mel hammer and a crow bar.

Old council houses usually need new plasterboard, completely new wiring, plumbing etc. This is the sort of stuff you can rip out yourself, but if you're not in the trade, you'll have to get sparkys, plumbers, joiners and plasterers to come out to re-fit.

It totally depends on the time you'll be devoting to a project. If you're there full-time you can do a lot yourself, but if not, you can easily get cheap labour in as stated above.

Oh yeah, i failed to mention that. I agree ripping old fittings out is a task i have done myself, its the re-fitting which i believe is not worth doing yourself given the speed and cost of labour. :)
