for a group of 21yr old lads who dont care for going out partying etc, i figured itd be cool having somewhere to call our own where we can do what we like(within the law) ... like buying somewhere in the UK in the countryside would be great, a dive to do up.. but saddly its just too expensive..
Saw the mad prices in some places in US and it became attractive..
So the general consensus is detroit = nono, so where else would you recommend that is pocket money.. lets face it.. £50-£400 for these places is FUNNY.
 
Say there's six of you - it'll cost at least £2000 just to get there and back. Sure a group of six lads can think of a more fun way of spending £2000 a few times a year.
 
You'll have to pay council tax $1000's per yer

Utilities bills (water, electricity, gas) - because you can't just connect up whe you go over there - probably $1000's. youll need this if you plan to cook a meal or flush the toilet

Cost of flights

basically its a crap idea buying a house in detriot.

i mean why not just stay in a 1* hotel for $30-40 a night, will be nicer and safer
 
basically detroit, loads of propertys for $100-$2000, basically pee cheap, loads are just boarded up etc, repos due to the recession.

Hmm £2000 a year, indeed thats a fair amount, it was just the idea of getting somewhere in US i romanticised with, may start looking towards countries that will be attempting EU membership within the next 15years instead, may have to put it on hold while i get myself into a career, literally just want to buy somewhere CHEAP and do it up.

For property that cheap you'll end up in the Ghetto and likely some really rough areas of town with crap neighbours and high rates of crime. You'll go back to find it turned into a drug den or completely trashed by squatters.
 
I've just done a search, most of them are fire damaged! You wouldn't want to live there, but if you did, you wouldn't want to leave in case it wasn't there when you got back!

OP. You really aren't considering this are you? For that price (like someone else said earlier) It'll be in an absolutely awful condition/area. I wouldn't be suprised if when you weren't there it got broken into and emptied.

Remember they're fire damaged for a reason.

If you spend anything on repairing it / renovating it - you're a mug!
 
Detroit has a brilliant airport. That's about it. I've never set foot outside the airport and I never plan to either :)
