I got some decent contact from a company looking to speak to me about working for them who are based in Woking.

Now I was giving it some serious thought until I started looking at the housing costs rent wise and near **** myself :eek::eek::eek:

Now in my mind £1000 per month is nuts, how can anyone afford that, esp nowadays is beyond me. Am only after a 3 bed detached house, hopefully not in an estate but out on its own.

Now there hasn't been any discussion on wages or anything like that but still, for me to live I would need to be earning double what am on now, maybe more to live comfortable as I have a misses and a 10 month old daughter.
My question goes out to those who live in the area to tell me how they do it. What’s your rough wage bracket, are you renting your house, both people working?

Cheers all once again
Joe

Please edit your post.

The fact that you had to get around the word filter should tell you that you shouldn't be using using the word in the first place.

OcUK would like you and your whole family to learn and share via our forums. For this reason swearing and the posting of "adult" or offensive material is forbidden. Simply replacing some of the letters in a swearword with a * or any other character is not acceptable. If you must then please replace the whole word with ***** or other repeated character. We also expect members to behave respectfully and not launch personal or abusive attacks on other members. Those who post for the sole purpose of causing trouble are not welcome here and will be dealt with accordingly.

My misses and I rent a 2 bed flat near the centre of Sheffield, which is approx 19% of our take home pay which I think is just about acceptable. Any more than 20% and I would be unhappy with it.

You've got no chance of a 3 bed detached house for £1000 pcm unless it is falling apart or you live miles and miles away from Woking. Out on its own is even more wishful. I would set your sights much lower............much much lower.

£1000pm for a 3 bed detached? You must be ****ing trolling.
That's what I pay for a 1 bedroom flat in a gated development in the heart of Kingston.
Before this I was paying £700 for a studio apartment.

By the sounds off it so far that's just the normal then. Don't know how you men manage thatw. Am currently paying 550 a month for a 3 bed house which is in great nick. Good kitchen, wooden floors, cental heating and large garden.

To people from the south east, that does seem absurd....to people from everywhere else (and by the looks of it he's not even in england), that's not that weird. My last house was a detached, 3 double bedrooms with a garage and panoramic views and it was £595 a month.

Woking from Belfast is going to be a pretty major step up in living costs. As above three bedroom detached houses in this neck of the woods cost an absolute fortune and this is reflected in the rental costs. I live in Leatherhead, and our mortgage on a three bed terrace is over £1000 per month.

£1000 for a 3 bed in surrey - that sounds like a bargin.
I think your being a little unrealistic if you think thats expensive , other option is to move out of the big areas more and the price normally drops a bit. or that and get a 2 bed £800 rental.

For those naysayers, £1000 cpm for a 3 bedroomed detached house might be possible. I live in one (£1,100) in Wokingham which is a pretty darn expensive area so probably not too different to Woking (in fact, Wokingham might be more expensive as it doesn't really have 'bad' areas).

You'd have to be very lucky, though.

I was very lucky.

Your right am not in England, but just outside Belfast. Am not after a massive house, just a nice 3 bed which isn’t too far from Woking, I don’t mind driving to work up to 30mins away.

I know the cost of living is higher in England than but house prices are nuts. Shows you how much I know in my wee bubble 

Rightmove.com has two 3 bed in house for rent in Woking at just under 1000pcm. They are right in the outskirts. 2 beds seem the norm for that price range.

I would expect there to be a decent increase in wages over what you're on now.

Seems that you need to adjust your expectations somewhat with regard to property prices though.
I was paying £650 per month for a 1 bed flat in Surrey when I lived there (near Staines) and that was 10 years ago now.

Woking has decent connections to London, if you don't need them look where the connections are poor or non existent, don't pay for something you won't use.

Same general area as you - 1 bedroom flat, £840 per month. Council tax on top of that too...

Personally I rented a flat pretty central to woking (very south side of Horsell), 1 bed - 700pcm. We had to move due to baby and bought a fairly small 2 bed on the west side of Goldsworth park, which is further out but cheaper, doesn't have an amazing reputation but I'm perfectly happy and cycle to work every day round the lake and down the canal (except today.. flat tyre..). Equivalent rents for this kind of property is at least 800 to 900pcm I think, you would possibly be able to get a small 3 bed terrace in goldsworth park or knaphill for 1000pcm if you're lucky, maybe a bit more.

Interested to know which company this is as the one I work for is based in woking and has an office in belfast... If you're going straight into the right kind of role you should be able to afford at least 800-900, although it might or might not be a bit tighter than you're used to*

* very commital sentence there I must say
