Property security - anyone?

I'll make one request. If you get CCTV or IPTV, please, please get it in decent enough resolution so I can actually make out someone's facial features. I have had to sit through far too much CCTV which was totally pointless becuase the resolution was too poor to be useful for anything evidential - even on a system that was install less than a month ago.

For some locks you can change the barrels rather than the entire lock. This might be cheaper. You may be able to recover the cost of this on your building or contents insurance if you think someone stole a key as part of the burglary.

I would be inclined to spend as little as possible because you don't know how long you will be at the property.

You don't need to have the landlord do all of this for you. You could change the locks but keep the original locks, then when you move out put the original locks back in. You could also try getting permission from the landlord to organise yourself for alarm/cameras to be fitted.

This way you retain ownership of all this new security and can take it with you when/if you move out of the property. Otherwise you are mostly just paying for the landlord to have some nice upgrades to the property to keep when you leave.

Good shout. I'd do this. The landlord probably loves you buying nice security features so they can raise the rent for the next person. Possibly look into wirless alarm systems too so you can take most of it with you when you leave.

Does upstairs neighbour have the same lock as you?
Change your barrel when she isn't home and maybe see if your current key fits her lock (fnar!)
Anything you install should be discreet rather than blatantly screaming 'CCTV HERE, SMILE PLEASE' as it can be avoided if its known about.
Do your windows lock and stay locked? Have you tried breaking into your own place without damaging anything? I only ask as a mate found that he could repeatedly hit (lightly) a window until the handle fell off and the window would open.
