Have a client who is looking to put router inside as part of his PC build...
Not a good idea imo but its what he wants.

Is it possible, daft idea...?
Cant see any advantages of doing this tbh.

Any thoughts/comments?

thanks. :)

Only way I can see it working is with a fairly big case that the router can sit on the case floor and using the watercooling grommets on the case to take the power cable and Ethernet cable.

Sounds ridiculous to me.

Extra heat? I know my router gets pretty hot. Plus the case isn't going to do wireless signals any favours. I don't see it causing any major issues though.

A router doesn't generate nearly as much heat as a decent cpu or gpu however it gets hot due to no active cooling. Will not be an issue in an actively cooled case.

A large enough case could have it stuffed in a 5.25" bay. Perhaps. Depends on size of router.

ADSL modem/router or cable router? could possibly reduce the sync speed on ADSL due to EM fields inside the case and the close proximity to them.

Considering the pc is likely to be on the floor it's pretty bad idea from a network coverage standpoint too.

Definately a bad idea anyway unless you can somehow mount the antennas on the outside of the case.

Stick it on top or mount it on the side as above.

Thanks guys.
All the above reasons are why I think its not a good idea.

I've got back to him looking for more info and my doubts.
Space wise its a non starter, the case is not big enough anyway.

Is there such a thing as a router "card" that can be plugged in?
Thinking maybe Cisco type pro gear...

thanks.

If he only needs an internet connection as far as this one machine and is happy to wait for the card to dial it each time the machine boots up it IS completely possible to get even vDSL modem cards for PC's.

If he wants the internet available to any other device (especially when this one PC is turned off) it's exceptionally silly. You'd be doing him a favour by getting a few explicit reasons why he wants this (or sharing them if you know em). Supplying exactly what he wants blindly isn't really making a good job of it. (all said nicely, not judging).

Why in the hell would you install a router inside your PC, i cannot fathom why anyone would need to, short of being extremely tight for space.

You could always have the modem/router in another room/cupboard, then use powerline adapters to carry the ethernet connection.

I'd suggest asking your client what problem he is trying to solve by having the router inside the PC, i cannot imagine having the router in the PC it is the best solution available to him.

heh
I think guys its just a case of someone who doesn't speak computer having a "good idea" about what he want's..

I've reversed the question by asking him what he hopes to do with it set up this way.
Its a non starter anyway, was just curious if it was possible.

thanks. :)
