I don't personally see a problem with the current system. An update to a project log will keep it on page 1 for a good week or two. I think that's plenty long enough, and it means that logs are only returned when there is actually new content. Are there really enough project logs to warrant its own section?

No there are not enough project logs, putting them in a seperate sub-forum would highlight them and encourage more, i hope.

A good case build will take weeks/months to achieve and its a great help if people look at it and comment, both positive and negative.

It would also serve as a place of reference. You'd be suprised by the number of emails i get about basic sleeving.

This section gave me great ideas for builds in the past, now it seems that anyone who has bought a new case just posts pictures of it.

Yes your proud of your new kit but what interest is it to the viewer ?

No details of assembly , quality of the case, just woot i've got a new case.

Other forums have a 'modding ' section and OCUK should.

CC has become very stagnant recently, hopefully a change will revive this

Love this idea. Should make it easier to browse logs and draw ideas from them for future builds, as well as showcasing the talent of the forum regulars. My only concern would be that the rest of CC would be left only with the occasional question about whether a gfx card would fit. As Mrdbristol says, hopefully a change will breathe some life into the forum.

As Dangerous as this is, I agree with MRDB

a separate section would allow them to remain on "the front page" for longer and not get lost amidst the stellar number of queries and "how do I sleeve these cables?!" posts

It's the first place I have have looked on other forums, sorry to be judgemental but I want to see the quality of the work and the advice given before I start posting my own work... it can only benefit the forum IMHO ;)

Excellent idea, i hate trying to look thro the section to find build logs. Plus i'm about to start (yet another) TJ07 build log

Could we force topic names... i.e not just Thgoon's build log... instead have a discription like: TJ07 Thegoon's Watercoolled log.

I think you've already made up your mind based on the polling wording :D

I remember this topic coming up at least two times before.

The first time it wasn't needed as yewen sticky had links to all the current logs
and links to the helpfull / best of from previous years. (anyone else remember that...)
This removed the need for a subsection

The second time, there were only a few true logs active - so it never happened

As with Mr.B I don't class pic's of a new case or story board of assembled parts a build log.
But I fully encorage them as main CC posts - especially if the thread owner then goes on
to answer specific dim / quality / ease of use type questions.

This time we have a series of current builds of greater and lesser complexity and budget
and some excelent 'best of' that need highlighting to newer members.

So if a mod is happy to move project into the subforum when they are shown worthy I'm all for it.

I don't think OcUK is ready for a free for all project log section, just yet.
In a 3-6 months maybe, but untill there are a good few benchmark project in there it will need some active moderation.

It would also be a good place to showcase OcUK builds - as this is a shop forum afterall
BUT (and it's a big but) these should be keep to a single thread ideally as they very rarely
tell a build log story or use modeling tools of any kind.

A quality £5 blowhole how to log is much better that a £2k 'build' with glossy pic's
Both have their place but only one is a project log imho

in a very selfish way I like w3bbo sig idea - but think it better served as a avatar or subtitle (like 'man of honor' 'don' etc)

Gets thumbs up from me.

Like the idea of separating "build logs" from "mod logs".

Not too sure about the elite section though. could seem a bit...well...eliteist

Good idea, but ive noticed one thing lately, it used to be that there was a lot of modifications by users for builds. Ie, take a case and mod it to suit your needs, lately case manufacturers have addressed theese concerns, particularly for watercooled rigs, the 800d being an example, its a very common case theese days for a watercooled rig. I actually thought about it myself, (im an odd ball, if the common herd buys a bmw, il buy an audi lol), but as i still prefer the option of a case thats good for water/air, i went for a lian li a70f. My system is still currently air cooled, but water cooling is my next choice when i can afford it.

Sounds a much needed feature to me. Both [Build Log]s and [Project]s being in the subforum doesn't bother me as long as they are labled properly, there's a lot of [Build Log]s labled as [Project]s these days. To me whacking some parts in a case is just a [Build Log] regardless of how pretty you make it, a [Project] should require a significant amount of modding/custom work.

Excellent News

the section has been given the thumbs up from Spie

Going off shadowscotland's idea which i never actually thought about...

perhaps i could edit the titles of the entries into a certain uniform format.

[Project Log] in the title of ongoing projects with regular updates

[Build Log] in the title of interesting builds

this way it will be easier to spot the difference between the builds.

it doesnt have to be elite, newcomers need to be able to showcase their work too. this way they can get guidance from the guys who have been modding for years.

It wouldn't really be elitist, to have a "best of" section though? I know the clue is in the name but still, just one subforum for all the build/project logs, and then a best of section where the mods could move certain topics to if they're deemed in the top 10% of topics?

The only rule I'd recommend is to disregard water/air cooling and cable braiding. This isn't about the size of the wallet or the techness of a build, it should purely be done on whether a build looks good or not. (I'd rule out the H50 though, that is one ugly cooler. :p).

How are you planning to do it then mate?

Here are my thoughts:

1. Modding section

Don't know how this will work as modding can come in numerous guises that could be worked into sections already here.

2. Project section

A project is a blog of someones creation of there own design. Unique is the key (at least to some degree) and shouldn't be diluted by simple 'plug and play' efforts like we have at present.

3. Build section

A section to show off builds that are standard builds that have little/no modding involved (buying a cold cathode does not count as a mod in my book!).

4. Elite section

I like the idea of this as long as it isn't swamped with 'so so' builds - these builds should be exceptional and an inspiration to others. This section is not about how many SSD's you have or how many GPU's you can cram into a case. Money is not everything, originality is. This should be the cream of OCUK systems that will put the UK back on the enthusiast map. I think they should also be voted for by ocuk staff/dons and not the general public as I would hope the dons are experienced enough to know what makes a good system and appreciate the hardwork involved. The current star system wouldn't really cut it in my eyes as it is totally underused and forgotten by most members.

Perhaps it would be best to have the above as stickies under a general theme. Modding could have guides (cable sleeving, spraying, cutting etc). Project logs and build logs - I think this would work best if you create a label for the build/project and they label it to give an indication of what it is, a project log or simple build log. I'm pretty sure the latest version of vBulletin allows for the user to label it himself that the admins have created with a choice of [Project] or [Build] for example via a dropdown menu when creating a thread. This of course would need to be moderated by you to ensure folk are using the correct title.

The elite sticky should be a locked section with no way to create a new thread (only by you - by moving the [project] to *Elite*), of course people should be able to reply to the threads in elite, just not being able to create new threads in that section.

great idea, and probably help with some sponosred builds getting more noticed too.

And I do think basic pc builds do count as build logs though.
Cause they're still interesting.
