Ok, so i got found £1000 lying around (as you do) and decided my terrible ass dell studip 1735 ****top has done enough damage.

The intended use of my system will include:
  • Dual booting linux and windows 7 (64 bit)
  • Heavy use of graphic design ranging from Photoshop to a little bit of light 3d modelling in Maya
  • Gaming, lots of it
  • tinkering, i like to tinker. A lot.
  • A tool with which to learn about overclocking (mild OCing, and this will be a long term thing, im not looking for anything too intense)
  • and what ever else people do on computers now-a-days

All that said, some prerequisites include:
Price range - around 700-800 (not including a monitor/software/speakers)
I like intel
I don't mind weird lookin stuff

um, here is a list of options i am thinking about, if im totally off the ball here, let me know, if im spot on, then let me know, i know some things are down to personal choice, but im free to debate with anyone the pros and cons, after all you guys know more than me about these things.

Motherboard - Initially i was going for the Asrock P67 Extreme 6 which is going for about £160
But then i came across the GA_P67A-UD7-B3. which is going for around £290. I think i would prefer the Gigabyte, it looks better, is much more "future proof" too.

CPU - Goin all out, with a intel i7 2600k. Not sure whether to go with the cpu including the stock cooler or not :S As im still debating a CPU cooler to buy.

RAM - 996983 - 4GB Mushkin Radioactive
(2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800, 6-9-7-24
I just really like the look of these bad boys. Impossible to find though. saw them for £47.41 + 6.00 shipping from god knows where.

Case - Corsair 650D
One of the few cases i like - killin me at £154

HDD - WD Caviar BLack 1TB
Everyones getting it.. but its expensive at £67.00

GPU

Im not sure here, willing to spend the money, but i can't decide between the GTX 480/580 or the HD 6950. Probably my second hardest decision to make.

Monitor - 24" thinking dell, just cause i've worked with them before. The ergonomics and style i love, they are just priced so ******* high!

Optical Drive, - Sony Optiarc at £18 :D

Cooling- Looking for a nice CPU cooler, one that is not the best, but also i don't like noisy. Looking for an efficient low noise one, rather than all out power, or all out quietness.

Keyboard - microsoft sidewinder x4
I did look at the Logitech illuminated keyboard too, and just wanting other peoples opinions really.

PSU Corsair Pro 750W - honestly, i don't even know how much power i will need. 750w just sounded right.

Any advice or comments would be soooo appreciated. I hope you can tell i did some "homework" but if people are selling you something they don't always give you the full picture.

Thanks in advance,
Setsoru

Windows 7 32bit? Shame that you're limited on RAM if that's the case.....I just upgraded my work machine and went for Win 7 64bit and lots of RAM - Photoshop loves it.

EDIT: As above - get rid of those links or you won't make it passed your first post :o

Assuming you get your mushkin RAM at, lets say, £55 and the UD7 for £290 (including shipping?) that leaves £355-455 which isn't enough for an 2600k and a ~£200 GPU, let alone the PSU, case, HDD, DVD drive and aftermarket cooler. Your gonna have to cut down on the motherboard and RAM if you want an 2600k based build for £1k

Right, it sounds like you've been spun quite a lot of marketing bull by competitors (seriously, OCUK is just plain better, buy from here), so I'll set you straight on a few things.

1. Get Windows 7 64bit. Dual boot to Linux if you like, but if you're doing Windows, get 7 64bit. No questions.

2. You don't need a £290 motherboard. Say "future proof" again and we'll laugh at you. You should be looking at spending £150 tops, you really don't need to spend more than £110-120 here. Super expensive motherboards are for people with very specific uses, or people with far too much money to spend on rubbish. Usually the latter.

3. Get an aftermarket cooler, but don't go too expensive. I like the Hyper 212 Plus and the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro. The Corsair A50 and Akasa Venom are good choices with a slightly heftier price tag, but I really don't see the point in spending more than £20 when the difference is a mere couple of degrees centigrade.

4. You will only see your RAM when you put it into the computer, so looks don't really factor in to be honest, and Mushkin's not got the reputation for reliability that Geil or Corsair have. Get one of those guys instead- for less money. 1333 or 16000Mhz are both fine, ignore the CAS timings as they don't matter to you. Probably worth getting 8GB if you do a lot of heavy work in Photoshop / Maya / etc. The price premium's fairly small now.

5. Get a Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB for the hard drive. It's nearly £30 cheaper and it's basically the same performance. Buy an SSD if you want something fast- you'll have plenty of dosh left over if you take my suggestions.

6. The case is nice, but you don't need to spend that much. A £50 case is near identical in performance. You could spend that money on better graphics, or an SSD.

7. Graphics- get yourself a 6950 2GB and flash it to a 6970. This is fantastic power for your money, and will max out (more or less) everything on a 24" screen.

8. Monitor- get a Dell U2411H. They're awesome.

The CPU, DVD drive and PSU look like great choices. The mouse/keyboard, I'm the kind of guy who buys the cheapest option because I can't see the difference, but as long as you don't spend too much money on them, Sidewinders are popular.

Apologies for the long post, just trying to help with the pitfalls so many people fall into when building their own computer :)

His budget is £700-800 dude. It's £1k w/ monitors and stuff.

Oh monkey poop! I saw the 1K at the start of the post and went from there lol remind me next time to read the full post before starting lmao!

thats a real nice spec but to save money maybe an i5?

For his budget I think it might have to be, I will go back and tweak it :)

EDIT - Brought the cost down to just over £900 I can probably get lower if you take a cheaper case and HDD etc?

That would give a total cost of £801.10 plus shipping.

photoshop and modelling wouldn't use any of the benefits on the Z68 boards, with the exception of the SSD Caching. but you'd need to spec a small SSD (possibley the 30Gb OCZ Agility) as well.
i7-2600K would be ideal. But doesn't look hopeful on this budget!

Within budget and with a slightly less powerful (but still very much awesome and plenty to game at 1900x) graphics card, your build:

If you find there isn't enough money for a nice Dell U-series, TN film monitors in the 21-22" range are perfect in the "just over £100" range for gaming, although the quality of colour leaves something to be desired if you're very conscious of that kind of thing in Photoshop.

i7-2600K would be ideal. But doesn't look hopeful on this budget!

That's what I'm thinking too. Well, not without compromising on the case anyway. If there's a cheaper case that you don't mind it would make things a hell of a lot easier. Otherwise you have to skimp on the graphics card or something because it's going into the £900+ range with that case.

I changed the case in post 10 to the Coolermaster Elite 430 for that reason m8 ;) got the price down to just a smidge over £800.

all awesome advice!

Most of the products i looked at, like the Gigabyte Ud7 motherboard, and the casing, i had recommended to me. From customers, so maybe it was just down to the looks, which (as they are in my case anyway) don't really matter.

I have decided to not skimp out, and spend around 900 on the computer without the Monitor. I will get paid next month and then buy that separate.

No ones yet to comment on the power supply, and people are talking about 600-800w. Still i guess it depends on my decision in terms of GPU and motherboard

Hybrid, if you can tell me where i can buy a Dell U2411H i would! been looking around, but they seem to be retired :(

The reason i said this motherboard was future proof (in comparison to the other one i had looked at) was because of the amount of PCIE slots it has, the extra thick copper. If i wanted to go sli or cross fire in the future, my options would be far more than if i chose a cheaper board with less on it.

I didn't mean some fancy marketing said it was future proof. :D you can still laugh though

how about something like this, obviously you could go cheaper on the case and PSU to save some.

after rereading the thread i see your rather smitten with the corsair 650D...personally i don't like it but its up to you of course. your not going to be able to come in on budget while including that case as others have said, not with out seriously compromising elsewhere.
