Pro's and Con's of an LED backlit monitor for gaming.

Title says it all.

Wanting a good monitor for 3D gaming.

Answers in a nutshell format please.

No opinions, just the facts please! :P
 
In all honestly it is just a different backlight source and should be one of the last things you should consider when it comes to purchsing a gaming monitor. Depending on the model some potential cons include a possible blue tint (often minor and easily correctable) and backlight bleed-through which is slightly more noticeable due to the hue. On the plus side they are thinner, lighter and more energy efficient. They also reach their native colour temperature and brightness instantly and operate independently of temperature in this way - whist outputting less heat. Due to lower operating stress and greater efficiency they also degrade much more slowly; a less pronounced reduction in brightness and change in colour temperature over their lifetime. That's about all there is to it for your needs.

I've had CRT, LCD and LED monitors and LED suprised me the most.

They are VERY bright, and sharp. Also I dunno if this was just my shopping luck, but I picked up a 22" 2ms 60million colour monitor for £109
 
It's all about the panel when it comes to gaming, the backlight is secondary. The instant on, energy efficiency and style are plus points, but my acer s243 has horrible washed out colours because of the panel not the backlight.

As above - it's just a backlight and is still LCD. You can get extremely powerful CCFL backlights as well (ones that do in excess of 500 cd/m2) which is undoubtedly brighter than any monitor you will have seen (inside). In terms of perceptive brightness (something Samsung are keen to push when they introduce OLEDs) there are many variables but these are not really dependent on backlight. The only thing I would say is that many LED-backlit monitors do have a slight blue tint (unless the manufacturer has compensated in which case you may get a tint of another colour if not better colour temperature) and this makes whites appear 'brighter' at a given luminance. The problem most people have when comparing CCFL and LED backlit monitors is that they are comparing a monitor that is several years old (and often smaller) with really poor out of the box colours and limited luminance with a brand spanking new LED-backlit monitor. Poor comparison.
 
So what shouldi go for with regards to CCFL, TFT or LED backlit lol.

Im want a cracking monitor thats going to last me a few years and a few upgrades.

Been looking at the BenQ 23.6" ones for around £280. Got good reveiws.
 
The BenQ has some bad reviews as well. I suppose the same could be said for any monitor. I frankly think it's outdone by the competition but it depends what you're after. Some recent food for thought - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18304162. If you really don't like glossy screens then you can get an LG monitor (W2363D) which outperforms the BenQ in many areas for £100 less. I think that speaks volumes.

P.S. TFT is not a type of backlight. It's an 'active matrix' arrangement which pretty much all modern monitors use. You may also have come across 'TN' which is a very common type of LCD panel.

BUT!!! No DVI input, just HDMI, the card im looking at getting has a mini HDMI out but will it be ok quality wise etc vs DVI?

Im looking to use this monitor for 3D use so wouldnt i need 120hz?

Only seen a handfull on them that are at 120hz.

The vast (and I mean vast) majority of 3D monitors on the market make use of 120Hz refresh rates to drive active shutter glasses. The only recent 3D monitor on the 'common' market without is the LG D2342P which uses a quite limited passive technology known as FPR.



That is a nice monitor - but to make good use of it you need an AMD GPU (or a specific aftermarket Nvidia GPU) with DisplayPort outputs. Provided you have the computing power to drive well over 60fps (ideally 120fps), a GPU with DisplayPort outputs, a suitable budget and don't mind a screen that is quite glossy then that Samsung is probably a very good choice for you. I have shared some thoughts on a similar 27 inch monitor (a hybrid - with built in TV tuner) here with a full review on my website. I hope to review the S23A750 or S27A750 next month - as you may have noticed it hasn't been released just yet. ;)
 
Link to the sort of GPU i will need please?

What spec will i need to get over 60FPS etc? Planning on getting a i5 2500k, 8 gb ram, also have an M4 ssd to help etc.

Can you not get a DVI to DisplayPort adapter or does it not work like that? I havent heard of Display port before.

Failing that could i not use the HDMI out?
 
Not sure about the DVI->DP adapter (would also be interested to know) but you cant use HDMI to drive 120Hz at 1900x1080 (full HD), it just doesnt have the bandwidth. HDMI will do 120Hz at 720p but why limit yourself. Therefore to make use of the Samsung's 120Hz u need a graphics card that has a Display Port output - most AMD cards have this but you have to look carefully to find an Nvidia one that does. In some cases u may need a mini-DP -> Dp adapter if the graphics card has mini-Display Port.
 
DVI to Display port is a no no aparantly.

DP is much higher bandwith so its counter-productive really.

Also the MSI GTX 580 have DP out so would have to fork out like £800 on a Monitor and GPU just for this to work but i have a feeling, boy would it look bitching!
