Guys,

I need educating. I have no idea on who to vote for at the moment. My ignorance on our involvement in the EU is not helping.

So can I have your views on if we should "Say NO to EU!" or if we should embrase the EU, and why.

Cheers.

Just become a racist, things are a lot easier then... :D

My View

The British people voted to join the EEC (European Economic Community) which has massive benefits in terms of free trade etc etc. This was then morfed into the EU (European Union) without the agreement of the British public this still has all the trade benefits but also has tonnes of irrelevant wastage, takes decisions about legislation in this country that we wouldn't agree to and costs billions. For this reason I say no to the EU we should withdraw and take up the same free trade agreement as Switzerland and Norway.

I will however not be voting UKip as the party s a waste of time and full of social climbers and wannabes.

Im not sure you will get a balanced opinion on here.

The EU is a political project where its ultimate goal is to create a superstate much like the US. This I am against. I think the EU is good for a lot of things but I dont want to be the US of E. The problem is, there seems to be no way of stopping it - even if a country votes against a treaty - they still push it though - disgusting.

Interesting thanks.

Out of Lab, Con, Lib who is more receptive to puling out of the EU? I always thought that Lib Dem are extremely pro EU, Labour are pro EU, and Conservative are slightly skeptical. Does that sound about right?

Cheers.

Thats about right. The UK Independence party want to withdraw. Personally I dont think it would be at all wise to withdraw.

The pros and cons largely come down to personal opinion. For some, treaties such as European Convention on Human Rights are very positive progress whilst others would argue that they reduce the power of British courts.

Personally, I'd like to see massive reform of the EU but I'd like to see the UK at the centre of a reformed Europe. We've got a lot to gain from a united Europe. The party that most closely aligns with my views is Libertas but it's hard to find enough information on them to decide whether thy're a bunch of loons or not.

(As an aside, I refuse to vote for any party that uses text speak, i.e. NO2EU. Urgh.)

The EU occasionally has its uses: it slapped down the UK government over the handling of Phorm and started legal action over UK privacy laws, which was rather nice of them.

I don't think I'd say the odd thumbs up that the EU gets justifies all of the hassle and money it costs though. It has its uses, but there needs to be clear limits to how far it's taken in my opinion.

Like Christo said you'll be hard pressed to get a proper, impartial opinion anywhere.

Yes the EU was originally an economic union, but how can you have economic union without politcal union? Free trade, freedom of movement and less transaction costs might be well and good but how can you decide the detail of these decisions fairly without elected representatives?

For example, say we leave the EU tomorrow and try to join in a purely economic sense. Our diplomat goes to brussels and says we want x y and z. They reject our proposals and instead offer us something far weaker with taxes and limits on employment etc etc. We couldn't do anything to stop that because we'd have given up our diplomatic rights in the EU. This seems far less acceptable to me than to actually get a say in what happens.

Britain, France and Germany stand at a crossroads in the world. Our populations will never be big enough to compete with the likes of the USA, India and China, so we have a choice. Either we go it alone and fall by the wayside. Or we pool our resources and actually compete as a group, together.

Im not saying the eu doesnt have its problems. Yes its corrupt, yes its wasteful, yes the cap is awful, but if we leave completely we will be isolated in the world. It will not be glorious isolation, it will be lonely, weak and pointless.

France and Germany have repeatedly offered us the same free tade (free means free) deal as is already in place for Norway and Switzerland. We would then still be part of the economic block but without the ridiculous European involvment in our courts and the hideaous use of our tax funds to prop up the economies of the former soviet states.

Yes to Economic Union, No to Political Union.

I wasn't aware of this but any future changes to our position would still suffer the same criticism I have already made.

Because our courts are always perfect and make the right decisions?

and the hideaous use of our tax funds to prop up the economies of the former soviet states.

What, like Wales, which also receives a considerable amount of Eu funding?

Edit: I know you can say the balance is off...we give loads more than we receive back. However, if you believe in progressive taxation and redistribution you kinda have to accept that in principle.

The UK's fishing waters would be greatly reduced if she pulled out of Europe. Examples could be multiplied.

Yes Lib Dem are very pro EU, but they are also very pro choice. They want to preswade you its best to stay in the EU, but are willing to pull out if the people realy want it.
