Pros and cons of having a kitten

Negatives:

They smell
They turn into cats from kittens
They use you as servants
They're not a dog
No-one will want them once they're past the kitten stage so re-homing if your situation changes will be difficult

Positives:

They're cute, for a little while, as kittens

They don't smell, yes they produce **** that smells like little else on earth! but the animal itself is very clean.

As for turning into a Cat, mines way past that stage, more the size of a small dog!

They Try to use you as servants.

Mine thinks its a Dog, of that I'm sure! :D

Drive into the country, kick it out and drive home, the Cat will survive quite happily.

:D

To me, it seems a bit cruel to keep cats indoors. Our cats aren't exactly avid hunters but you can't stop them going outside, they go mad.

to keep your cats inside at this point probably would be cruel, as they are used to going outside.

ours have only ever been indoor cats, and are perfectly happy. We were also told by the dspca to keep them as indoor cats when we got them. Ive heard this from several other rescue agencies as well. the cat's protection league will be able to give you more definitive information, but its widely accepted that cats can be kept indoors with no ill effects.

Pros:none
Cons:Spray everywhere, all over your sofas, its desgusting,

un-neutered males do have an unfortunate tendency to do that sometimes. females and males that were neutered before reaching maturity should be fine though. Ive certainly never had any trouble with it and ive had cats since I was 11.

also: dIsgusting :p

Our Dave isn't snipped and he doesn't spray. Shags anything that moves though, so that could be the trade off.

Negatives:

1. They smell
2. They turn into cats from kittens
3. They use you as servants
4. They're not a dog
5. No-one will want them once they're past the kitten stage so re-homing if your situation changes will be difficult

Positives:

6.They're cute, for a little while, as kittens

1,5 - blatant lies.
2,4 - blatantly obvious.
3 - blatantly true.

6. My 5 year old tom cats are still cute, in a "killing anything that goes near them then leaving half of it on the kitchen floor" type of way. :D

also: consider the cost!
other than the initial costs of buying the kitten and all of the stuff it'll need (iirc bed, litter trays, bowls, scratching poles, crate etc etc came to about £100)
food / litter (decent food = £10 ish per week, litter £5 per bag every few weeks)
we pay £9ish pcm insurance
flea treatment is £17 every couple of months
neutering (£75 for our little girl) and vet checks / jabs aren't covered by insurance (£40/year)
i know the rspca take in a lot more pets when 'times are hard' as people don't realise how much it costs to really care for an animal!

changes to lifestyle will include getting up when the cat wants you to (ours likes to be up at 6ish) she gets on hubbys chest and meaows till he gets up!
they will claw at carpets / furniture / curtains (may be an issue if you are in rented / care about how your stuff looks)
you can't really leave a house cat for any length of time (i.e nights away)

we had our Ami from about 6weeks of age (she was too young really) litter trained from the start, but she has never been out side, and shows little interest in going out (except the only time she came on heat, just before she was neutered, she went mad trying to escape!)

also, if your flat isnt big enough for a degu, is it really big enough for a cat?!

Pros - Almost everything!

Cons - When mine was a kitten, I got so many scratches up my arms I swear people thought I was self harming or something :o
Also, although they're great with litter trays, beware of them sticking their foot in the doings. I can remember many a time having a kitten in one hand, baby wipe in the other and a peg on my nose!

Can't say I'm a big fan of cats being kept indoors, but I guess I'd rather they be kept indoors with caring owners, than let outside with rubbish owners.

And +1 for rats! They're awesome!
