Hi all,

I was diagnosed with Prostate cancer late last year. I was 38 at the time and thought I was too young to have this kind of cancer.

7 days ago exactly (08:30am - Friday 03rd April) I underwent robotic prostectomy which involved removing the entire prostate using an amazing bit of kit called a De Vinci Robot. (an no... you can't overclock it!!)

I am now back on my feet, taking it easy but it's amazing how good I feel :)

Anyway, I just wanted to give you guys a heads up really as I know there are some old timers on this forum like me so I thought it would be relevant to post this here.

Next time you see your GP ask him about a PSA test. Its a simple blood test which just might save your life. It did for me.

For more information, visit Windsor Urology.

cheers :)

Thanks for this post and pleased you've beaten it

Glad you recovered! It's a shame this isn't taken more seriously by the NHS given how big a killer it is and growing, especially considering how much money is spent on breast cancer.

Hey congrats! Its something thats quite close to my heart as my grandad has terminal prostate cancer. I also share my birthday with him.

Prostate cancer had my old man. They didn't catch it until it was way too advanced to do anything about.

PSA tests are free, quick and painless! I'm 33 and will be having one every 5 years.

Awareness of Prostate Cancer needs to be raised. Too many men don't even know what a Prostate is let alone how to go about getting checked.

I've started work on a blog which will go through the whole thing end-to-end which I hope will help others in the future.

At the end of the day a simple blood test is all that's needed.

I lost both grandfathers to Prostate Cancer and my father also had it. Happily he survived although it was a close call. He had the "open" operation which took a long time to recover from. It has also spread out of the Prostate and had become very agressive.

I ended up having the same surgeon as my Father did, that man is a God as far as I am concerned and my family and I will be forever greatful to Mr Omer Karim.

Anyway, I'm sitting here, 7 days after my operation. I've still got the catheter in and also a wound drain but neither are causing any problems for me. I might get them out today when I see my consultant later.

Congratz on beating it & Thanks for the Heads up, I'm an old duffer so will ask on next visit.

So it's worth getting this done even if you have no problems or symptoms? Anything else they can do at the same time? I've basically never been to the GP for a checkup, only when I've had something acute.

To be honest, I never had any of the typical symptoms, no pain, no loss of bladder control, not loss of erectile function, nothing. If you are getting into your mid-thirties it might be worth talking to your GP about a PSA test.

GP's will normally say that they start testing around 55 but I have heard of a guy who was 28 who had Prostate cancer, and I also know of another 38 year old as well as a 41 year old who also had it.

It also depends on your family history. With mine, I had no chance. But if a male blood relative in your family has had Prostate Cancer then it's worth getting checked.

Thanks for the heads up. I wasn't aware that there was a test you could have but being 32, I'll be thinking about the test for the near future...

Thanks for sharing your story. I'm sure we're all wondering what happens now with regards to the bedroom department? If they've removed your prostate does that mean you don't ejaculate anymore?

Congrats on beating it. I'm 24 at the moment so I don't think there is too much worry for the time being but I will definitely keep the PSA test in mind for when I'm nearing 30.

I'm just off to see my consultant for a check up but when i get back later I'll answer any of your questions as honestly as I can.

Hope this doesn't go against the "no media threads" rule ??

Great news! Am really pleased they caught it before it was too late.

My grandad also has terminal prostate cancer but has been on hormone treatment for nigh on 7 years now and it hasn't slowed him down one bit.

Thanks for sharing this and your blog with us. It's something blokes should be acutely aware of.

That's the way, keep your pecker up! :) :D

No, seriously - its made my day brighter, well done, and good advice to us all in that age range. I'm 35 so I should be considering it.

Im going to be 38 this year also, will be going down to the gp's and aksing for a PSA test soon!
Thanks for the info, and glad to hear you're making a speedy recovery!
