Protect Second hard drive?

I got a second hard drive to store all my pictures and videos, i was wondering whats the best way (if there is a way) to disable or enable write protection on my second hard drive?

This is to protect it from viruses, i know the best method is prudence but i would like a safty net incase that fails me .

best way is to have a at least 1 backup via external HDD or optical discs or both
