protecting strawberries in the garden`

so how many of you avid gardeners grow strawberries?

year after year something keeps eating mine even after I put a net up.

what do you do to protect them?

Get a Portal Turret, they'll talk to the strawberries as well

I net mine but also have around 20 plants so I rarely have a shortage of strawbs even if some pests have a munch.

do u use chicken wire?


I'm googling and it suggests chicken wire and some straw on ground there is talk of hanging some old CD's wtf?

I use a small gauge protection netting, maybe 1cm squares, made from plastic. Very thin and pliable.

Straw on the ground and netting over them, suspended in the air a bit to stop things poking beaks through etc!

CD's are meant to work as they bounce light about, i imagine frightens birds off etc

The only problem I've had is with wasps eating them but I have enough to keep me and the wasps happy so don't go out of my way to stop them. Not sure if netting would prevent wasps getting at them anyhow.

so straw on ground - where can I get straw from? Garden centre? or shall I just use dried up grass?

nets I'll make some sort of cage and cd's are worth a punt too

You can get straw from pet shops too.

Also, make sure my daughter isn't around. She can strip a whole bed of strawberries in minutes.

The blackbirds eat mine. I net them up so their little theiving yellow beaks can't get in

It really depends on your budget and how much you care for your fruit.

heres what my grandad used to do every year he grew them

netting with poles sown in each side to stop little buggers lifting the netting up

frogs / toads and birds love em
