Protein Shake Question

Unflavoured Whey Protein. It could be a coincedence, but i dunno as id never took 50 in one go before

I know that the branded whey proteins tend to have other "stuff" in them, that could lead to a bad stomach, but I've always found unflavoured whey to be very clean tasting and easy on the stomach.

What flavouring do people use with their shakes anyway? My long standing favourite is:

3 parts Innocent smoothie
1 part juice made from concentrate
and a little water.

I've always found that adding cocoa, just doesnt cut it for me. ProLab's NLarge2 tasted great, but I think their flavouring was a little more complex then just adding some cocoa or chocolate powder.

Yeah they add loads of sweeteners and other gunk that has no place in a healthy diet, I'd rather not it have in my shakes.

Once you have a couple of weeks off sugar and sweeteners your taste buds adapt and eating healthy food is not only easy but more pleasurable than it was living off junk foods.

Don't take 50g of whey in one go. If you really want such a big hit of protein make sure at least half of it is a slow digesting protein like egg or casein. Keep whey down to 30g-25g imho ;)

Nothing, I'm a man!! ;) Actually I have some cocoa in there but only for anti-oxidant purposes - honest! :p

can i ask a silly question..

are you adding the oats to the whey dry ?

and what kind of oats is best ?

Get any oats really. Pop them dry into a blender and make oat flour. Add this to your dry whey and it mixes really easy. The Tesco Organic Jumbo ones are really "oaty" but any of the larger oats are good, smaller basic brand ones don't blend very well.

If i'm out on site and need to take more than one shake I use plastic freezer bags to store the pre-mixed powder then pour it into a shaker and add water. Reuse the shaker for the second shake, reduces the amount of stuff to carry around.

So what's the best (considering price) flavouring for unflavoured whey? Nestlé? Need something chocolately that mixes well with water. Hmmm

If not bothered about being healthy or eating simple carbs then Nesquik is ideal. Or just get the flavoured stuff from Myprotein with the nasty sweeteners?

If bothered about being healthy then you can just add Green & Blacks organic cocoa powder. Very good for you for all kinds of reasons, much the same as why red wine and green tea is. Also rich in important nutrients like magnesium and zinc to name but a few.

I also add organic coconut milk to my protein shakes before training. Tesco have just started selling an organic version pretty cheap. Very good for you, low carb and high in MCT's so an awesome source of energy. Great for when trying to drop bodyfat :)

Mix those two and it tastes like a bounty but without the sweetness, I love it.

Organic this organic that - sounds nice and very tasty but also a good way to make cheap protein expensive?! Thanks for the tips though and I'm certainly not trying to rubbish your idea (got to be careful what you say with all the testosterone floating around in this subforum ;)).

I wonder if there are any cheap and healthy ideas for flavouring a smelly foul powder?

Ever heard the phrase "you are what you eat"? ;)

Organic oats and cocoa aren't that much more expensive than the regular versions, i'd be surprised if they added more than £3 to your weekly food bill.

But once again we come to the question of dedication. Unflavoured whey is far from nasty, just get it down ya man!! <<<<<whey rage ;)

You're right in what you're saying. Some organic is rubbish, some massively over priced, some isn't any better than non-organic BUT...

Some products are definately worth buying organic and some are only very slightly more expensive.

Green & Blacks organic = £1.42
Cadbury's cocoa = £1.30
Cocoa is worth buying organic and worth the 10% premium imho.

Coconut milk and oils are very much worth buying organic for many reasons. As far as I can tell Tesco's own organic is not expensive at all.

Upto you though ;)

If bothered about being healthy then you can just add Green & Blacks organic cocoa powder.

Ive been having Smoothie and Whey for a few years now. So need a change. Yesterday I bought some Green and Blacks Organic Cocoa. I mixed this with whey and Splenda sweetner (cocoa on its own is hard to ingest). The taste of this is better than most pre-prepared chocolate whey (though NLarge2 is still better).

Im shedding bodyfat right now, so I might try this. Bounty is lovely, though I havent had it for several years (I'm a chocoholic so I have had to eliminate chocolates completely).

Question: the coconut/cocoa shake contains only coconut milk, cocoa and whey - correct? You dont add any water?

Coconut milk, cocoa, whey, milk protein concentrate + water.

The milk is way too thick to make the shake without water. Also very calorie dense. I only add 50ml as I'm cutting and that's 85kcals and 9g of fat. Could easily add upto 200ml if you wanted though if bulking.

Right ChongWarrior, I went to Tescos and have been looking everywhere. I cant find this coconut milk you speak of. Whereabouts is it located in your branch of Tesco?

I get my coconut milk from an oriental supermarket in town. If you have one nearby I'm sure they will have some as it's a common ingredient in oriental dishes.

Out of interest, how bad is it to add sugar to a post workout protein shake? (NOT that I think unflavoured unsweetened whey is bad! But generally speaking I like to create recipes which taste good.)

Has anyone tried the myprotein flapjacks?

Gonna be circulating around several sites for the next month or so and need some snacky things to munch on (theres no set schedule, just where I'm needed). Thinking about picking up a box and leaving them in the car.

Yes they sent me one to review which I put here: http://forum.myprotein.co.uk/showpost.php?p=206772&postcount=30

Other people put reviews in this thread also http://forum.myprotein.co.uk/showthread.php?t=14047&page=2

Very filling!

Great, might pick up a box then. Could be very handy and the price isn't bad. I've had the CNP Pro Flapjack bars but MAN did those things disagree with me..

Cheers CW
