I am a noob to protein shakes and stuff and just have a question on my mind...
For example if you were to spend most of your day watching tv and lying on a bed and not doing any physical exercises, and you were to take either protein shake worth 100 kcals or Kit-kat worth 100 kcals which one would be worse and make you fatter? :p

For someone not doing physical exercise i answered the question. My point would also stand for someone who lifts if they had already hit their protein target for the day, extra protein may not be needed in which case the remainder of the target calories could come from anywhere.

That's the problem, the OP asks which would "be worse and make you fatter?" - essentially two different things questions.

Purely for weight loss, the shake is better, it will fill you up for longer and protein is harder to digest (I commonly read 25% of the calories in pure protein are used just to digest it). Some shakes are more carb than protein though so be aware.

As part of a balanced calorie controlled diet, it doesn't matter.

You will lose weight on 1500 calories all from McDonalds and you would gain weight quickly on organic crap, innocent drink smoothies and all the healthy things you can imagine if they add up to 4000 calories a day (assuming average male weight and not that active) .

But weight loss is not the only thing, I'm fairly confident that if you take into account and measure blood pressure, insulin sensitivity, cholesterol etc you wouldn't like what you see.
Some crap in your diet every now and then won't have much of a negative impact and will make your life bearable, but a kitkat is full of crap and there are a bajilion other (healthier and tastier) ways to get those calories in.

I'm not sure I've seen a protein shake that is more carbs than protein. Do you mean meal replacement or a post work out shake style thing?

As others said, a calorie is a calorie is a calorie. An argument could be made for the macros you're missing out on when eating just crap, but in essence you won't gain weight if you eat 1500 calories in Kit Kats a day.

I assume post workout shake, ready to drink ones from the supermarket are this type commonly, big buckets of whey from my protein much less carb or none.

Bleurgh McD's! *hurl*

Anyway, if you're inactive 100 cals of protein shake or kitkat is still 100 cals. However, as mentioned, the insulin and hormonal response of the sugars and carbs from the kit kat, will possibly adversely affect your state, and keep you satiated for a shorter period of time.

I'd personally choose the shake if I had no choice, purely as it will be marginally less "bad" for you. Though the hormonal response and how your body copes with the different elements of the food cannot be ignored either - though ultimately you will still be ingesting the same calories.

Are you honestly saying that a shake is only "marginally less bad" for you than a kit kat in terms of nutrition? I know you're a fan of your full foods, but I don't think a shake can remotely be in the "bad" category!

In terms of pure nutrition of course not. I was using the term "bad" as it is what was used in the OP. :)

In terms of calorific intake - other than the point I made of hormonal reaction and how your body copes with that sort of intake - then it's hardly different. :)
