I am looking to build 2 or 3 machines that will run Promox (unless anyone has better suggestions) and node them together. Want to run potentially 30 VM's (DHCP server, DNS Server, Web Server, Generic Workstations, etc.)

Ideally trying to make this build as cheap as possible, so I am going to ditch items I can get away without (case).

Budget, I am looking to spend about £300 per node, so £900 for the total 3 nodes. Realistic?

I have a rough idea of what hardware and components I think I am going to need, however, is anyone able to suggest what they think?

Need any more information let me know.

I had a look at this thread earlier but didn't post as i really didn't know what the requirements for that proxmox program (and nodes) are, but i can advice you about a spec.

I would suggest you not to action your thoughts currently, the spec is a pretty poor one.

First question though, how can you 'get away without a case'? Where will these live? How will you switch them on?

So, old tech Ivybridge is a no, no. Haswell is around the same price, no reason not too.

RAM, you really need dual channel configurations in each system, which means 2 sticks of RAM per board. 1 x 8GB stick won't cut it.

Thats a an expensive 500GB Drive

Please (for all that is not on fire) don't get those PSU's. They aren't of any good quality.

Is no graphics card needed?

Bearing your uses in mind i see no reason for you to be overclocking these rigs...
