Hi Guys,
I wouldn't mind trying to set up a proxy server, I have half decent machine with ubuntu on it that i wouldn't mind using to play around with.

Anything i should know or any guides/suggestions before I get started.

Squid is fairly simple to set up as a proxy server for simple use (a quick Google should find you all you need to know).

If you want access for else where over the internet, (rather than just being accessible form inside your local lan), then you should enable username/password controlled access (which is again pretty easy to do using a NCSA format password file). You can of course authenticate again a lot of other things but this is probably one of the more quick and simple ways of doing it if you are just creating the proxy server for yourself.

Jumping in on the thread but how easy is squid to authenticate against AD?

I seem to rmember trying before but couldnt get it to work correctly, cant remember why now...

Doing a complete re-install of ubuntu and will install Squid as soon as its done. I will let you know how I get on, no doubt further help will be needed from you guys.

Can you control Ubuntu via Apple Remote desktop? I have enabled the vac server on ubuntu but can't seem to get a connection?

I can use terminal but want to use the GUI to configure Squid as I'm not really good with Terminal

Once Squid is installed and running, you can access it to change settings etc. through a web interface.

I've never installed it any other way, but it's not completely awful doing it through command line.
