I use a super hub 3 in modem mode with an ASUS router. My mum has been working from home on the computer and it’s all been working fine.

Hiwever, in the last week, we have had constant and daily dropouts lasting quite a while and when we reboot the equipment it’s working again. However, today it completely stopped and wouldn’t connect again.

Every time there was dropouts and I did the troubleshooter, it said it could not automatically detect proxy settings, and I don’t know why this has suddenly started after a long time of working fine.

This may be stupid, but is there any chance remote working and logging into other companies networks can affect my own proxy settings?

I tried calling virgin, but they were about as useful as an ash tray on a motorbike

First thing I'd do is put the Virgin hub back into router mode and try it without the Asus. If there's a still a problem get back onto Virgin.

The proxy problem is most likely a side effect and not the cause.

Thanks, already done that and it’s working fine. Phoned virgin, but they have told me to phone ASUS, who hold me to phone Virgin! None of the companies are interested in actually helping it seems.

It depends what you mean by 'logging into other companies networks' but in principal, yes. If you're just logging into a VPN connection, then it's possible as a VPN client can modify settings, but it would be an unusual way of doing it. If you're joining your computer into the Active Directory of another company then yes, your proxy settings can definitely be changed. It's a fairly trivial thing to do.

That said, not being able to detect proxy settings in a home environment is what I would expect as it's very unusual to even use a proxy at home.

When it drops out next check if you can ping the router and then ping 8.8.8.8 and then ping google.com. If the first one times out then you need to check cabling or your wifi connection. If the first works but second doesn't then it's likely your internet connection is down. If the first & second work but third doesn't then you have a DNS problem. It's thankfully been ages since I used Virgin Media but I woudl often see reports of DNS issues.

This is a user problem, not a Virgin problem. Virgin are responsible for providing a connection to the SH, you say this works when the SH is in router mode, so that’s the end of Virgin’s responsibility. When you decided that you wantEd to install a 3rd party router and run the SH in modem mode, you became responsible for supporting and configuring that hardware and any issues that are use with it. If the OEM wasn’t a joke, they would provide basic support, but this is ASUS :D

FWIW I also use a Hub 3 in modem mode with an Asus AC87U and VPN into the office all day, every day during the week and have never had anything like this.
